What Started World War II? The war was thought to have started with Germany attacking poland. “When Germany entered the western portion of Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany. But when Russia moved into eastern Poland, there was no war declaration by either nation.” (threeworldwars.com) For some reason they thought it was an act of war on Poland, but that was because of what happened before. “When the attack ended shortly before 10:00 a.m., less than two hours after it began, the American forces has paid a fearful price. Twenty-one ships of the U.S. Pacific Fleet were sunk or damaged. Aircraft losses were 188 destroyed and 159 damaged, the majority hit before they had a chance to take off. There were a total of 2,403 American casualties, including 68 civilians, most of them killed by improperly fused anti-aircraft shells landing in Honolulu. There were 1,178 military and civilian wounded.” (military.com) This attack absolutely devastated Pearl Harbor and left the military there defenseless. At the time, the president was Franklin Roosevelt, and had taken action on the event of Pearl Harbor. “The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan; Congress approved his declaration with just one dissenting vote.”
