Why Did Ben Carson Come To Read?
Ben Carson grew up very poor. He had a rough childhood because his parents were divorced, Ben and his older brother, Curtis, would always get bullied because of their skin color, and Ben was called the “class dummy”. Even though Ben was known as the “class dummy,” he always strived for excellence. He would read all the time and that helped him a lot in school.
How did Ben Carson come to love to read? It was all because of his mother, Sonya Carson. She always pushed Ben and Curtis to always do their best. I love how Sonya Carson was supportive and encouraging to her boys. A passage I found interesting was: “Anytime Ben and his brother complained about the TV restrictions, Sonya Carson firmly held her ground and insisted: “If you boys keep reading books, someday people will be watching you on television!”

As he was in college, Ben needed a job.
He found a job at Sennett Steal. The men showed Ben how to operate an overhead boom crane. He couldn’t believe that those men gave Ben, a college student, the responsibility of operating a crane. Ben had a special gift from God, to think and see in three dimensions. That’s when he realized he wanted to be a brain surgeon. When Ben went to medical school, he found a new surgical technique. Ben watched a neurosurgeon while he was doing surgery. ‘“The hardest part is finding the foramen ovale,” the surgeon told his students.”’ Ben thought there would be an easier way to finding the foramen ovale. After class, Ben went to the radiology lab to start his experiment. It took numerous days but he didn’t give up. Finally, he did it! He found a new way. He questioned telling his professor, so he kept it to himself for a while. Then he decided to tell his professor and he was right. Now this method is mostly used because it is much
easier.
Once Ben graduated from medical school, he became the best pediatric neurosurgeon. He separated 5 sets of Siamese twins.
