Why Did The Era Of Good Feelings Deserve Its Name?
I think the “Era of Good Feelings” doesn’t deserve its name because of the many problems during this time period. Although there weren’t any wars during this time, there were many political and economic problems, such as inflation. The “Era of Good Feelings” also had issues over problems such as slavery and national/state banks. In the spring of 1819, for example, the national economy crashed, causing people to lose their homes and everything overnight. The Panic of 1819 started with the National Bank. American bankers issued banknotes that were not backed up by specie, which expanded the U.S. paper money supply. With an increase in paper money, inflation started, increasing the price of goods and land in western territories. “American state and private bankers issued banknotes that were not backed by specie (gold or silver), which rapidly expanded the U.S. paper money supply. …show more content…
Loan officers visited people’s homes demanding payment be given in full in gold or silver. The state banks then called in their loans and the national economy collapsed. “Hundreds of employers all around the nation, unable to borrow money to pay their bills, went out of business. In urban centers like Philadelphia, unemployment reached 75 percent of the working force, and several thousand workers were imprisoned for their unpaid debts.” (D-2) This shows “The Era of Good Feelings” wasn’t all good and especially the time period of 1819 was

At that point in time, social unrest, political ambitions, and unconditional economic interests came together to cause a power push to increase the money supply. (1). On July 14, 1890, Senator John Sherman of Ohio passed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. This act provided for the issuance of legal tender notes sufficient in amount to pay for approximately 4.5 million ounces of silver bullion every month at the frequent market price. Democratic nominee William Jennings Bryan knew that he had to have a catchy platform for his campaign. He then decided to go with ‘free silver’. With the economy…

This was very similar to the Jacksonian policy of ending the bank of the United States and putting the money in "pet banks," or state banks, around the country. However, to the dislike of Jackson, these banks were now able to print large amounts of paper money that helped fuel the economy. Populists wanted this to continue, to help counter the deflation of agricultural goods. Some Jacksonians liked this paper money, others wanted hard money, meaning gold and silver coins. The free coinage of silver and the opposition to the gold standard was a Populist quality. Sticking with just silver would allow inflation, good for the farmers, who had suffered from deflation. Populists continued the common man's fight over the currency issue. They also pushed hard for a graduated income tax. This kind of tax, forcing the rich to pay more money than the poor, soon became the law of the land with the passage of the 16th Amendment to the…

James Monroe (1817-1825) “Mr. Era of good feelings” Grade: B Monroe was another president following the success of his democratic predecessors. Monroe established a strong sense of confidence and nationality in America, resulting in what was coined as the Era of Good Feelings. Monroe also re established principles of neutrality and slightly progressed on the issue of slavery. However, under his presidency, America faced a horrible economic fall.…

As the conclusion of the nineteenth century rolled in to the twentieth, deflation was becoming a greater issue to deal with for farmers throughout America. Money supply was one of the problems farmers believed were the reason to their discontent. As the years went by, houses were being foreclosed due to the high mortgage rate the government put on the farmers, which they couldn't keep up with. The people party, or otherwise known as the populist party, saw that is the American government would begin coining and using silver as currency, the foreclosures and discontent would cease. However politicians felt differently. They believe that in would make matters much worse than it already was. The fact was, that the government wanted the railroad business to stay strong and in order to do that, rates had to be raised. An example of a scam, the farmers were told that they would get a two cent shipping rate on their cropped goods. Instead, the rate was raised to five cents, making it impossible for many farmers to afford. Industrialization was very successful in…

The “Era of Good Feelings” was a time period that lasted from about 1815-1824, and in this era there was increased nationalism and prosperity for the country. Still though, there were very crucial issues being argued over in that very time period. During President James Monroe’s two terms as president, the country’s patriotism was at a very high level and on the outside it seemed as though all were going extremely well. However there were problems within the country which were soon to be lifted to the surface. Some of these disagreements were on the infrastructure, sectionalism, and foreign policy.…

The period after the War of 1812 is historically labeled as the “Era of Good Feelings”, and, while this label was accurate, culturally, it proved to be false in the economic and social aspects of American life; furthermore, the politics of 1815 to 1825 initially resembled an “Era of Good Feelings” but, as time progressed, this label became inaccurate. Therefore, the “Era of Good Feelings” only applies to the rise of cultural nationalism and not the social, political, and economic realities of 1815 to 1825. This period in time consisted of a stark rise in nationalism and pride in the American identity, but also of the continual growth of social, economic, and political sectional issues. Nationalism, with its emphasis on pride in the country…

Although the Era of Good Feelings is known as a time of remarkable growth and development in the United States, it has also been considered a time of "evolution in American nationalism." The years following the War of 1812 have been called the "era of good feelings" because the period was one of one-party politics ted by the Jeffersonians. In the Election of 1816, James Monroe defeated the last of the Federalist candidates and caused a decline in the Federalist Party. During this time, there were no real party divisions. With no opposition at all, Monroe was amazingly reelected in the Election of 1820.…

Many historians have described the decade following 1812 as the “Era of Good Feelings”, but was it actually something good. The Era of Good Feelings was during Monroe's presidency, during this time period there were no major conflicts between political parties, because the Federalist party had disbanded and the Democratic Republicans were in power. America had just won the war of 1812 and everything had seem to be perfect, but not actually. I disagree with calling this time period the “Era of Good Feelings” because of the Panic of 1819, sectionalism between the North and South, and the opposite views on tariffs. To begin with, the Panic of 1819 was really the first financial crisis the U.S had encountered.…

The period of time from 1815 until 1825 was considered an era of good feeling because Americans felt a very strong sense of nationalism because of their recent victory in the war of 1812.The Americans felt so much power in themselves that they wrote the Monroe Doctrine warning European countries about allying with the Latin American colonies, that were becoming independent. The American economy was booming at this point in time which adds to the era of good feeling. The recent invention of the cotton gin and the two major textiles company run by Lowell and Slater also helped the economy but led to their being more slaves because of the new need for labor. Socially, the advancements in transportation and the Marshall Court helped fuel the era of good felling in the United States. The first depression in 1819 was a terrible thing. Even though people were suffering, they still felt a sense of nationalism and that made the years of 1815 to 1825 an era of good feeling. Sectionalism, or only being loyal to your own section was also an ongoing problem that needed to be dealt with. There were constant arguments between the North and the South with each faction only loyal to their section and not to the entire nation as a whole. Even with all these problems the majority of people felt like these years were an era of good feeling.…

The Era of Good Feelings was the period in American history that began right after the War of 1812 and lasted until 1825. During this time, an industrial revolution had erupted in the north that saw transportation improvements and the implication of the American System proposed by Henry Clay. With this came a strengthened economy and a strengthened status. Furthermore, the time was dominated by one political party, the Democratic Republican Party and corresponded the term of James Monroe, who was elected twice with very little competition. As a result of a single party political domination, the country had little political strife; however, there was still tension amongst the people with the rising issue of slavery.…

The term "Era of Good Feelings" is somewhat deceptive because the term comes from the name for President Monroe's two term period where their was strong nationalism, economic growth, territorial expansions. There were many good things happening during the Era of Good Feelings but there was also bad things for instance the crisis over slavery in America which was causing tension. Sectionalism had developed due to the tension caused by slavery. The Era also saw other divisive issues that included the enactment of the first United States protective tariff and the establishment of the second National Bank. The events that occurred during this time period that showed a growing divide between the north and the south was the issues with slavery. The…
