A 19 year old leader named Marquis de Lafayette came to America to help with the revolution. He fought a few a few battles helped train the men in Valley Forge and became personal friends with Washington. He also donated his own money and became a Major General. Unfortunately, he was forced to return to France. Baron von Steuben In 1778 France signed a treaty with America, and declared war on England.
The treaty allowed Marquis de Lafayette to return, greatly improved the morale of the patriots, and after the treaty the French supplied the Patriots with large amounts of money, supplies, and weapons. France lent money and supplies since 1776 the same year the Declaration of Independence was signed. The French helped win the Battle of Yorktown. The Battle of Yorktown was a decisive victory for the French and American forces. The British general Cornwallis, who had just been defeated in North Carolina, marched into Virginia, with 7000 men. Marquis de Lafayette fought General Cornwallis in Virginia, and made him retreat to Yorktown. He blocked the peninsula so he could not retreat “upland. General George Washington marched down to Yorktown. He met with the French under Count de Rochambeau, and together they had 16000 men. Twenty French warships with 3000 men arrived in the harbor. Because France, Spain, and Holland declared war on Brittan they were staying to protect England and would not send reinforcements. The French supplied 100, 000 muskets. The French and Americans blew away the British fortifications. On October, 19 1781 the British surrendered. The Battle of Yorktown was the last major battle of the war, and was such a decisive battle that the British where willing to give Americans
Independence. Because they were fighting in their homeland and because of the geography of the American territory the patriots had a great advantage over the British. The English where sailing faraway an unfamiliar country. British soldiers were given orders from leaders in England so the orders where delayed. As supplies and food where shipped overseas food rotted and most of the animals died. Also supplies could only be shipped at certain times or the ships carrying supplies would be shipwrecked by storms. Because they did not have food or supplies the British raided farms and storages of supplies and foraged. The British where shot by farmers or frontiersmen with rifles.as they foraged or invaded farms. Also the British did not receive help from the many loyalists in America. Finally the great leadership of military leaders such as George Washington and the determination of Americans to fight allowed for them to win the war. The Americans only had militias at first but raised a continental army, and navy.
