Thousands of hundreds of slaves died of diseases and starvation after they were liberated . About 620,000 men died of starvation, disease, accident or in combat during the Civil War. Because of how bad the sicknesses were twenty-five percent of four million freed slaves suffered from illness or died between 1862 and 1870. Some freed slaves tried to join the union army but would get rejected. The northerners were more compassionate than the southerners about the slaves dying of starvation and disease.
