Until it was abolished, slavery was an extremely controversial topic. It got to the point when the South wanted to secede or break away. The South would want to secede because Lincoln went against their views, they would lose to the North in a war, and popular sovereignty could prove dangerous.
First, the South would want to secede because Abraham Lincoln was about to be president. According to Document 5, President Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 poster said that the Republican party supported free speech, free home,and free territory. This went against the views of the South. Popular Sovereignty basically meant the people voted. Also, during that time people voted on slavery. According to Document 1 it says, ”Utah and New Mexico Territories are opened to slavery on the basis of popular sovereignty….” The North wanted slavery gone and the South wanted it all the way. So, that vote on slavery was one of the most important votes.Also, another reason the South wanted to leave the union was because popular sovereignty could have ended slavery which they opposed.
In conclusion, the South would want to secede because Lincoln went against their views,they would lose to the North in a war, and popular sovereignty could prove dangerous. Were they justified for doing this? In my opinion no way. I think those are selfish reasons to leave the country. We need to stick together as a whole since the North and the South aren’t the only battles. You still have foreign countries and we need the Union as a whole to win those
