In other words, “The amount of…[reparations and payments] to be made by Germans shall be determined by an Inter-Allied Commision…[which will] consider the claims and give to [Germany] a just opportunity to be heard...however...Germans fail to [meet] the obligations...may be postponed...or [handled in another way by] the Allied and Associated Governments…” (Treaty of Versailles, 1919, Article 233). Germany had to pay $112 billion gold marks and $341 billion in 2010 US dollars, for these reparations. Germany was able to state their case, but no one took it seriously or listened to their side. These reparation payments were set to begin on May 1st 1921, and they were forced to keep paying these for over 30 years. If Germany ever failed to make a payment the Inter-allied Reparations Commision could take away their important resources such as: land, goods, or even send troops into Germany. Germany believed they didn’t deserve this type of treatment since they had signed an armistice beforehand and they did not start World War One.
