Why Did The United States Use The Atomic Bomb

World War II lasted six full years. During these six years from 1939 to 1945 many new weapons were created to strike fear in the eye of the enemy. One of these weapons was the Atomic Bomb, which was created through the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was created in response to fears that German scientists were working on a weapon using nuclear technology since the 1930s. In a remote desert location near Alamogordo, New Mexico, the first atomic bomb was successfully detonated. It created an enormous mushroom cloud some 40,000 feet high and ushered the world into the Atomic Age. In 1945 the United States had a decision to make, they either had to invade Japan or use the Atomic Bomb. The plan to invade Japan was called Operation Downfall, and it risked losing a tremendous amount of American lives. The other option was the Atomic Bomb, which would devastate Japan. Nevertheless, it would save countless American lives while doing so. By using the Atomic Bomb the United States would become the premier military powerhouse of the world.

The United States was justified when they used the Atomic Bomb, because ultimately it saved a multitude of American lives. It also showed the power of the American military. It struck fear in the eyes of our enemies including the Japanese and Soviets. However, it unfortunately started an arms race between the Soviet Union and The United States. Both superpowers started to stockpile weapons, which created more tension between the two nations. At one point the Soviets tested a nuclear bomb so powerful it was equivalent to 50 megatons of TNT, which was called the Tsar Bomba. It was the most powerful weapon ever
