Therefore, America trained the South Vietnamese army to fight the Viet Cong and in 1963, 16,000 advisors were training troops in South Vietnam. Many of these troops were not professionals. These men were young, inexperienced, and were from America's minority groups. This was one of their first mistakes - using troops who were not experienced or highly skilled. All they had was basic training behind them. US troops used helicopter gunships as well as aircrafts, allowing them to have total control of the air, this being helpful for destroying Vietnam's jungle with chemicals like Agent Orange, killing large areas of their jungle and forcing Viet Cong troops to move further inland. America entered the war with an idea of using traditional methods to conquer land in order to win the war.

The US was successful as they killed as many as two times the soldiers as they lost, but using this method included killing civilians which created riots and protests throughout America as many innocent people were losing their lives. America realized their strategies and traditional training was no math for the guerilla warfare as it was too difficult to fight against. THE US was successful in a few ways, however, the large amount of money spent on the war was about 60 million dollars more than what was spent on education, health and housing in America during this time. This, as well as Viet Cong's response being opposite to what they expected, disappointed and humiliated America. Overall, America lost the war simply because the battle against the Viet Cong was on a higher level to what they initially assumed it would be. Therefore, America had no choice but to withdraw from any further
