The War of 1812 was fought between the new and fragile United States against the British Empire, Canadian Provinces and a few Woodland Indian Tribes. The War of 1812 was an attempt by the Americans to establish their dominance in North America by conquest of the British owned Canadian Provinces. With an under supplied and undermanned army and navy the United States managed to scrape up a stalemate with the British. The British, with the defeat of Napoleon, turn back toward the Old World to establish their presence as the greatest empire in Europe. The Treaty of Ghent was signed by both, the British and United States, to agree upon an armistice and return all rightful land and prisoners back to their respective country. The War of 1812 had major effects in the aftermath of the war both domestically and in foreign affairs. The United States, coming off a decent result on land and even more importantly on the seas against the British Empire, gained more respect in the community of European nations. Inside its borders, America had the greatest nationalistic movement it has seen since the forming of the Union. Nationalism boosted the economy, the arts, and transportation. "The American System" was formed and an anthem was created that Americans can sing to show their patriotism.…

The war had a lasting effect on all parties involved. The US lost its first war, the objective of stopping communism from spreading failed. The war was also the first that the people and soldiers couldn't look back on with pride of a sense of accomplishment (Hochgesang, Lawyer, Stevenson 1). Due to the government’s secrecy and over reach of power, a distrust of the United States government, as an institution, grew that still exists today. The fall out of the war had massive, negative impacts on south East Asian countries. More countries would fall to communism. The devastation of the war caused economic repercussions that still effect countries today. Not only did the war cause lasting damage multiple countries, but it allowed situations that caused the death, slaughter, and starvation of millions in the years following the war (sparknotes).…

Following the War of 1812, the American people achieved an after-effect of winning a war called nationalism. With this new American pride they felt somewhat inferior or less than other, older countries such as that of Great Britain. This is shown in Document H, when Adams says that Monroe was not willing to be subordinated by Great Britain. This is also supported by the Monroe Doctrine, written as a warning to the European countries to stay put where they were if they had territories in/on the American continents already but, restricted them from expanding their American “empires” without having to deal with an interception made by the U.S. Moreover, Document C gives an impression of the country celebrating the Fourth of July in a happy spirit. During the War of 1812, Americans defeated many Native Americans in the west opening up the land for the Americans to claim as part of the Westward Expansion as seen in Document E. This expansion was essential because southern farmers needed more land to grow cotton and expand their idea of “King Cotton” and it also helped the people with economic difficulties put on them by the Embargo Act that put a tax on goods from Great Britain before the war.…

On the other hand many saw it as a burden and felt as if they carried the brunt and financial deficit that it caused. Prior to the war, Britain and the United States decided to sign a treaty and stop the fighting because Russia wanted the British to stop fighting so they could help Russia to fight the French. Within this treaty America didn’t gain or lose anything to the British, establishing a patriotic sense in the Americas.…

War of 1812 There were many reasons for why the war started. One reason why the war started is the British were being unfair to the Native Americans. In the fall of 1811 William Henry Harrison led U.S. troops to victory in the Battle of Tippecanoe. After the defeat, many Indians from the NW territory thought that they needed support from British forces in order to prevent American settlers from pushing them further out of their lands. At the same time, in late 1811 the War Hawks were putting more and more pressure on Madison, and on June 8, 1812 the president declared war on Britain.…
