Firstly, it led to increase in nationalism, even though United States didn’t win the war. It was the first war that the USA had fought without any foreign help. It led to manifest destiny, which increased the size of the US by ⅓. Sometimes this war is even called America’s Second War for Independence. Before this war, most nations thought that Great Britain would soon reconquer United States, but this war showed that it is not that easy, even for the world’s most powerful nation at the
time. USA proved to the world, that they are an independent nation. However, many people agree, that it was just a lucky escape.
War of 1812 for Native Americans was a decisive turning point in their losing struggle to govern themselves. The war affected American Indians, breaking their power. While Canada didn’t gain much, sovereignty from the United States was not lost, which is rather important. The war also demonstrated to the Americans the importance of an effective naval force for national defense. For some the war of 1812 marks the official end of the Federalist Party.
The war is called “forgotten” and is so obscure partially because no great president was involved. Madison was an introvert, very shy and although intelligent, he hardly measured up with such war leaders as Lincoln, Wilson or Roosevelt. Another reason for this war’s obscurity is that the causes are complex and different sources show different perspectives, which makes it a bit confusing. Lack of success is the main reason why the war is not so easily remembered. Although many people remembered the War of 1812 as a success, it was more of a failure, and perhaps this is why it attracts so little attention today. Perhaps, the biggest question behind the war of 1812 is who actually won the war, if anyone, and who lost. I say, that no one won or lost anything, except money and people in this war.
