How Did The War Of 1812 Start
War of 1812

There were many reasons for why the war started. One reason why the war started is the British were being unfair to the Native Americans. In the fall of 1811 William Henry Harrison led U.S. troops to victory in the Battle of Tippecanoe. After the defeat, many Indians from the NW territory thought that they needed support from British forces in order to prevent American settlers from pushing them further out of their lands.

At the same time, in late 1811 the War Hawks were putting more and more pressure on Madison, and on June 8, 1812 the president declared war on Britain. Though Congress voted for war, both the House and Senate had different ideas on the issue. Most Western and Southern congressmen supported the war. U.S. forces

troops were at the time. On the British side, they had a well managed defense by a British soldier and administrator in charge in upper Canada. On August 16, 1812, the U.S. suffered a humiliating defeat. They were defeated by Brock and Tecumseh's forces after they chased those led by Michigan.

For some American forces things looked better, like for the United States in the West. Harrison was able to retake Detroit with a victory in the battle of Thames, where Tecumseh was killed. Meanwhile, the U.S. navy had been able to score a few victories over the Royal Navy in the early months of the war. After the defeat of Napoleon’s armies in April 1814, Britain was able to turn their full attention to the war effort in North America.

On September 11, 1814, at the Battle of Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain in New York, the American Navy defeated the British fleet. On September 13, 1814, Baltimore’s Fort McHenry took on 25 hours of British Navy Bombardment. The next morning, the fort’s soldiers put up an American flag, which inspired Francis Scott Key to write a poem that is now a song called “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It was originally set to a tune of an old English drinking song, which would later turn into the U.S. National Anthem. British forces left Chesapeake Bay and began gathering their efforts for a campaign against New

The patriots defeated the British in Princeton, Bennington, Saratoga, Oriskany, Ft. Stanwix, Concord, Valley Forge, Trenton, and Yorktown. The Winter at Valley Forge was a lose for the patriots, over 2,000 men died that winter, and many gave up and went back home to their families. These victories have caused loses in large numbers and bigger hopes and dreams of our Patriotic forces. There were some patriot loses: Philadelphia, Brandywine, Germantown, New York City, and Ft. Ticonderoga. The victory in Yorktown was our last but one of our greatest victories this whole revolution. The 17,000 American and French troops that were sent into the battlefield made the British General Cornwallis surrender his troops and himself in October 19,1781. It…

The British captured a vessel that had Hull’s baggage and papers on it, resulting in them finding out what his plans were. Things became worse for Hull, as around 200 militiamen from Ohio refused to cross American territory, yet he continued to be confident. He and his men crossed the Detroit River and into Canada on July 12, 1812, where he announced a written notification letting the citizens know that they would “be emancipated from tyranny and oppression”. Hull stated “Had I any doubt of eventual success I might ask your assistance, but I do not, I come prepared for every contingency”. His words were laughed at and his brief seize of Fort Malden ended after Shawnee chief Tecumseh’s warriors ambushed his supply train. The Americans were chased back across the river and British commander Isaac Brock initiated cannon fire from the Canadian side at Fort Detroit. After a cannonball killed four of Hull’s officers in August, he surrendered his army and the city. During that time, the British had captured Fort Dearborn and an American outpost on Mackinac Island. General Hull was convicted of cowardice and neglect of…

Many historians have argued whether who was victorious in the War of 1812. Some claim Britain won, America lost and vice versa. In the Treaty of Ghent, ante bellum or the return to status quo meant Britain had won, but ultimately America was successful and gained long lasting benefits. Knowing the causes of the war and the events that went on can help give a clearer view on how America was the ultimate victor.…

During the War of 1812, General William Hull played an important role. He is most famous for his surrender to the British at Fort Detroit at the outset of the War of 1812, and for his missing actions in 1814. As the War of 1812 came along, President Thomas Jefferson sent Hull to defend the Michigan Territory. Hull recruited militiamen from Ohio and Kentucky. His primary goal was to defend Detroit, but he also launched a half-hearted invasion of Canada in 1812. Hull's army moved very slowly and lost any advantages it had in surprise and superior numbers of men. As a result, Hull retreated to Detroit. Hull's performance convinced some of Hull's junior officers to call for his removal.…

Even though Americans won the occasional victory at sea, they could not effectively defend all of their seaports at the same time. With the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1814, the time was right for the British to retaliate against the Americans actions in Canada. The British were finally able to give their full attention to the war against the United States.…

The offer that James Madison came up with was to stop attacking the U.S.'s ships, and kidnapping the sailors and in return the U.S. will stop trading with the enemy. France had accepted this deal, but Napoleon gave a secret order that they were still going to attack the ships. Great Britain did not take this offer, however since the attack did not stop Madison was pushing Congress that they needed to go to war. There were people who supported the idea of war, like people in the south and west, they were called war hawks (meaning they wanted war). They supported it because the British were giving Native Americans weapons, and refused to leave the Ohio Valley, which at this time was in the southwest region.…
