War Of 1812: General William Hull
During the War of 1812, General William Hull played an important role. He is most famous for his surrender to the British at Fort Detroit at the outset of the War of 1812, and for his missing actions in 1814. As the War of 1812 came along, President Thomas Jefferson sent Hull to defend the Michigan Territory. Hull recruited militiamen from Ohio and Kentucky. His primary goal was to defend Detroit, but he also launched a half-hearted invasion of Canada in 1812. Hull's army moved very slowly and lost any advantages it had in surprise and superior numbers of men. As a result, Hull retreated to Detroit. Hull's performance convinced some of Hull's junior officers to call for his removal.

The British captured a vessel that had Hull’s baggage and papers on it, resulting in them finding out what his plans were. Things became worse for Hull, as around 200 militiamen from Ohio refused to cross American territory, yet he continued to be confident. He and his men crossed the Detroit River and into Canada on July 12, 1812, where he announced a written notification letting the citizens know that they would “be emancipated from tyranny and oppression”. Hull stated “Had I any doubt of eventual success I might ask your assistance, but I do not, I come prepared for every contingency”. His words were laughed at and his brief seize of Fort Malden ended after Shawnee chief Tecumseh’s warriors ambushed his supply train. The Americans were chased back across the river and British commander Isaac Brock initiated cannon fire from the Canadian side at Fort Detroit. After a cannonball killed four of Hull’s officers in August, he surrendered his army and the city. During that time, the British had captured Fort Dearborn and an American outpost on Mackinac Island. General Hull was convicted of cowardice and neglect of…

The period after the War of 1812 is labeled as “Era of Good Feelings” which is accurate culturally but it’s proved economically and socially false. Therefore the idea of the “Era of Good Feelings” only actually applies to the growth of intense nationalism and not the political, social, and economic aspects from 1815 to 1825. Nationalism, which emphasizes the pride a person has for their nation, supported the label “Era of Good Feelings” but sectionalism showed differences in regions and therefore contradicted the label.…

War of 1812 There were many reasons for why the war started. One reason why the war started is the British were being unfair to the Native Americans. In the fall of 1811 William Henry Harrison led U.S. troops to victory in the Battle of Tippecanoe. After the defeat, many Indians from the NW territory thought that they needed support from British forces in order to prevent American settlers from pushing them further out of their lands. At the same time, in late 1811 the War Hawks were putting more and more pressure on Madison, and on June 8, 1812 the president declared war on Britain.…

The War of 1812 was America's way of proving to the World that they were a force to be reckoned with. Although at first they had nothing to do with the war between the British and the French, eventually they were caught between the battles and saw that there were reasons for them to go to war. First, the British attempted to restrict U.S trade to Europe. Second, the British Royal Navy's impressments of American seaman enraged many Americans back home. Lastly, Americans saw the war between the British and the French as a chance to take advantage and try expanding its territory into Canada and Florida. The very interesting thing about this war is that even after they had called a truce nothing was ever resolved but it established America's credibility as a powerful nation.…

He also went against his orders and invaded Florida where he captured and killed Native Americans. Congress refused to sanction him because of the Battle of New Orleans where he was declared a national hero. When he became president, Jackson's unfair prejudice against the Native Americans continued. He wanted to move all the Native Americans to the Great Plains, which was thought to be a wasteland by many of the Americans. Jackson pushed Congress to commit to the Indian Removal Act to relocate the Native Americans to the Great Plains, and he…
