Why Do Fraternities And Sororities Exist?
Should Fraternities and Sororities Exist? Stereotypically, sororities and fraternities are thought of as hosting extravagant parties and students being entitled to power. Despite that, sororities and frats are very beneficial to students, because they are more involved with the community therefore, leads to great leadership and social skills. (Kokemuller 1) In 1776, Greek life on campus all started when a student studying Greek at the college of William and Mary's, by the name of John Heath was rejected by two Latin secret societies. (Schnell 1) That led Heath to create the first collegiate Greek letter society with a couple of friends. (ibid) Heath named his society Phi Beta Kappa, and since then he created the tradition of having college organizations named after the initials of their secret Greek motto. (ibid) Sororities and fraternities are both known as clubs that are entitled to power and are always throwing parties every chance they get, but they have that reputation because of media. Media exaggerates how sororities and frats act, but in reality they are nothing like that because they are actually very beneficial for students. Being a Greek member has many advantages because Greek students are involved with the community, which builds good social skills, but when a Greek member you are given the choice …show more content…
(Weinstein) It is a requirement to have a grade point average between 2.5 to 3.0. It is also required to attend rush week. (ibid) In order to enter it is necessary to take part in rush week because it allows the organization to get to know you to consider if they accept you to join Greek life. (ibid) Like any college it is needed to pay a base fee every month, which is generally about $500 each semester. (ibid) But all sororities or frats have a different focus and some require different ideas.

    1. The setting for the short novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, is in the state of Mississippi, in the early 1930’s, which means that it is right during the middle of the Great Depression. I believe the setting is very important to the book because in Mississippi during those times there was a lot of racism and racial segregation, the African Americans people could not do the same things that Caucasian, white people could do. Also the setting is important because if they author had put the book set in a place like New York City the racism would not be the same as if she set the book in a place like Mississippi or really anywhere in the South. In addition the setting is important because if it had been set in the…

Back home we used the word pledge in places like bank or company to talk about business, extract money or property as a bait. Here pledge means being accepted as a member. The primary process of pledge is to teach newcomers the group’s values, customs, and fundamental facts about fraternity life. Another purpose is to allow upperclassmen to exert control over newcomers, thereby preserving traditions and teaching newcomers how to view the group, the upperclassmen, and themselves. Another example is “mixer”. It is supposed to be a kitchen utensil used for baking cake but here it`s used as a theme of party among the members. Mixer is a place where you can play games, have fun and meet new people. If a mixer is said to be “dry” it means they doesn`t permit alcohol on their house premises. Some fraternities are going dry at certain times (usually during rush), and all have different levels of "dry". Usually this term applies to fraternities since sorority recruitments always permit alcohol. Lastly, chapter can be viewed as a branch of a Greek life not a book chapter. Each named differently and usually designated by Greek Letters, in my case, it is Delta Sigma Phi. Chapter House is a house on campus where members of the organization live together. But not all fraternities have chapter houses. Some have designated rooms given to each of them, or a…

Alexandra Robbins and Georgianna L. Martin argue in their The Wall Street Journal 2015 article, “Should Colleges Get Rid of Fraternities?” if colleges should remove fraternities. Believe it or not, Greek life is more than just beer and togas. I know most people have a misconstrued perception of fraternities and sororities, but in reality, they are not like the movies. In fact, many successful adults were Greek in college. Recently, there has been a lot of bad press for some of these fraternities abusing alcohol, but of course, these scandals are all that make the headlines, while philanthropic fundraisers do not. Regardless of the negativity, that’s all it is, because in the end, all of these stereotypes are untrue. We have all seen those boys and girls walking around campus in those really awesome embroidered letters and wondered what it would be like to be a part of something so official and glamorous. Well, I say quit wondering and just go for it. Joining Greek life would be the best decision you ever made because people’s perception of members are completely off, the friendships you make will last a lifetime, and the benefits will help you in your future career.…

Most people do not have the ability to think of college without thinking of some sort of Greek life organization. Whether that thought is negative or positive may vary, but it is rare to think of any time in a college of any sort without thinking of a fraternity or a sorority at all. This is to be expected because most of these groups have somewhat dominated their campuses for hundreds of years, or since their particular chapters were formed. Supporters of Greek life, especially of fraternities, argue that being involved in Greek life organizations encourages brotherhood, the development of leadership skills, and the participation in philanthropic organizations throughout the students’ collegiate career.…

Today, there are approximately 900 million students who are a part of Greek life nationwide. Sororities and fraternities play a huge part on every college campus and incoming freshmen typically question whether Greek life is for them. Although this “club-like organization” offers students advantages such as long-lasting sisterhoods/brotherhoods, leadership opportunities, and future job connections, Greek life does have its fair amount of disadvantages. Greek life can be fairly expensive, time consuming, and even too exclusive at times. College is a time for students to discover themselves and decide on their majors. However, another decision that comes when entering college is deciding whether to pledge or not to…

Being a member of a sorority or fraternity can negatively impact your grades. Students that are members of a greek organization spend their average week going out more than once or twice, versus a student not associated with a greek house. A study done at Georgia College and State University by students doing a project having to do with finding the correlation between being a greek member and their GPA showed that, “Students not in a sorority or fraternity go out on an average 1 to 2 nights a week”, while students that are affiliated in a greek house “...go out on an average 3 to 4 nights a week” (Salleras). Although this study can’t prove that students would rather stay in and study it still shows that being a member of a sorority of…
