Why Do Law Enforcement Agencies Follow A Chain Of Command

Law enforcement agencies follow a chain of command. Departments have policy and procedures set in place that all officers in the agency must abide by whether they are placed at the top or the bottom on the hierarchy. Usually each city or local department has an elected Police Chief that oversees the daily operations of that department. Where as a county department generally has a Sherriff that oversees daily operations. Chain of command is set in place so that the lines of communication flows down the hierarchy. Either the Chief or Sherriff utilizes the policies and procedures that act as law within each department. If the laws within the department is broken, then consequences are handed down accordingly. Such as me or anyone that gets caught
speeding, that is considered breaking the law and we suffer the consequences of our actions.
The power and authority that the Chief or Sherriff hold in each department allow the office, the administrative team, and the officers to function within that department and where change is needed, it is directed by the management.
