Why Do Volcanoes Cause Acid Rain?
Introduction- Acid rain is created when certain gases are mixed with atmospheric moisture to create precipitation that is more acidic. Naturally occurring sulfur and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere can vary the acidity level in the rain. Acid rain falls in the forms of rain, sleet, snow, fog, gases, and particles. The pH scale is what classifies it and it follows a zero to fourteen scale and fourteen being most basic, seven being neutral, and zero being most acidic. The pH of acid rain is in the range of four point two to four point four. Humans are not the only specimens causing acid rain, volcanos and decaying vegetation contributes to the formation of acid rain. Acid rain makes water acidic and causes them to absorb the aluminum from the soil and runoffs into lakes and streams and some types of species can tolerate the acidity and other can not and they will start to die. It also effects forest and increases the trees chances of getting infected, catching diseases, prone to have more insects, and dissolves essential nutrients in the soil that the trees need.
Hypothesis- I believe that all the samples in the experimental with change but the chalk will not. The chalks seems like it is too thick and its material will cause it not to change. The apple will brown, the metal will change color, the lead will brown and die, and the indicator will change in some form, most likely in color or it will evaporate. Methods- To first start the lab you need your safety gear, gloves and eyewear. Next we placed ten drops of Sodium Sulfite in the bottle cap of the experimental dish and then had another group member hold the lid over the experimental dish while I placed five drops of Sulfuric Acid and I made sure that both liquids are mixed and then had a group member close the dish. Then placed both dishes into two different ziplock bag, wrote our names on it, and waited twenty minutes and recorded any changes into the data chart. We placed the dishes in the back of the class and picked up all materials and wait until the next class to record the results. Next class came and we picked up our dishes from the back of the class and looked at them and recorded them into our chart. Then when we were finished we threw away all of our samples and put the dishes in the back of the class and we were finished with the lab. Conclusion: The acid caused the apple flesh to have little to no change in how it looked. We know that the environment was acidic because it was the experimental and it had the sulfuric acid and sodium sulfite. We know the change was due to the acid, because the control’s apple browned.
