Why I Am Not An Environmentalist Summary
The article “Why I am Not an Environmentalist” criticizes environmentalism through the lens of an economist. The author, Steven Landsburg, compares environmentalism to religion. This issue came up for him when he first took action against preschool teachers at his daughter’s school. They were talking about Christianity while his daughter and a few others, were not of Christian faith. He confronted them and the problem was solved. Later, his daughter came home talking about environmentalism and recycling. He took issue with this even more. He then taught his daughter the opposite of what her teachers were teaching here. Landsburg explained to his daughter the impact her actions had on the environment utilizing economic terms. Steven

In Biology through the Eyes of Faith, it explains the difference between a scientist’s perception of nature oppose to a Christian’s perception. Scientists say the world evolved which conflicts with the theistic view, which says the world came about through the creator God.…

There are so many bad things in this world and the environment is one of them bad things. Our environment will never just go away but it’s definitely needs to change. It’s causing damage to our friends and family, it’s taking away all of our animals, and it’s hurting the world we know around us. If we don’t do something about it, will the world’s population go down because of a great amount of people dying? Will the animals become extinct and no one ever talk about them again? Will the oceans be able to hold their ground and keep producing the oxygen it’s giving us? Throughout this essay, Sandra Steingraber does a great job using ethos, pathos, and logos while talking about the environment and the issues it is causing to the people and the…

Excerpted from Rush Limbaugh's The Way Things Ought to Be, in “The Environmental Mindset” Limbaugh describes to his audience the so called “radical environmental movement” that was occurring when he wrote his book. He gives an explanation of his view on the environmental movement's goals and followers. While looking at Limbaugh's excerpt, he judges the entire movement based upon only a portion of the followers. Every claim he makes describing the followers for instance, “Most of the people running environmental groups don't work,” has no references for such a drastic generalization (Limbaugh, 1993, p. 441). Upon making such claims he attempts to state that environmentalists are making rash claims themselves and are using scare tactics in order to gain more attention from others. Limbaugh's overall claim he wishes for his audience to believe is that environmentalist groups are taking their beliefs and exaggerating past extent. Near the end he claims that the Earth would be able to regenerate itself and how we are unable to destroy it.…

In the essay “Green Guilt” by Stephen Asma, the writer claims that environmentalism has become a substitute for religion. This claim holds a strong argument when paired with the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary definition of the word religion which states that religion is “a pursuit or interest to which someone awards extreme importance.” With this definition of religion a strong argument could be made that anything we hold important can be our religion. However, a strong argument could also be made that our society and culture has not changed to make environmentalism similar to a religion, but to make religion similar to environmentalism. It is not a far cry to say that religion is not what it once was. Our society has changed and…

Many people are familiar with the well beloved Saint Francis. He is most well known for his care and love of animals and nature. However, people use this as a way to prove that he was an environmentalist in the modern sense of the term. They say he is one who tried to strike a movement against the brutalities and injustices of animals. The truth is, Saint Francis was a man who loved God’s creation and cared for it as well as he could. Saint Francis, however, is not a modern environmentalist, but exemplifies what it truly means to care and cultivate the creation which God has made.…

“…I want to consider whether there might be any reason to reduce one’s personal emissions even if [Sinnott-Armstrong is] right that doing so has no direct consequentialist payoff, that is, even if they are right that a reduction in emissions on one person’s part will result in nonexistent or negligible net change in greenhouse gas emissions overall.” (460, Hourdequin) Integrity is important when it comes to watching the effects of global warming. In order to understand an individual’s obligation to the environment there are two things of integrity; integration and integrality. There is no set…

The satirical lens of the literary work cannot be over looked. The sarcastic and critical diction emphasizes on the opposing attitudes about environmentalism. Additionally, the ridiculing natures of these passages are illustrative of how the opposing sides will never agree. “We call them greens, enviros…or environmental wackos,” shows the critical perspective of the environmentalist critics. “But we know them more accurately as…brown lashers, wise users…,” makes the distinction that neither side of the argument will ever agree. The idea is stated that they will not agree, and a discussion of the matter is unnecessary and will not make any progress in the world.…
