Where there are factories, there is pollution. The sky is terribly polluted and the air hard to breathe, but so is the air everywhere else. People are not allowed to go outside because then they would probably die from the acid rain that often talls or see how the land around them is dying.…
The essay Environmental Justice by Robert D. Bullard and Glenn S. Johnson explored many different aspects of environmental justice issue in the United States. They specifically looked at how communities of color have been specifically targeted for sites toxic waste dumps and other environmental hazards. A phenomenon known as environmental racism. Additionally, how grassroots organizations have had success fighting for the rights for the people in lower-class communities, as well for people of color. Corporations in their quest to provide products to the American people, and their bigger desire to make as much money as possible.…
They believe that population growth is not a serious problem because the world has enough food and other resources, all must be distributed equiuly. The practices of multinational corporations and weak regulation of these practices account for many environmental problems. To get the most of sales, manufacturers design products intended to become obsolete. As a result of this planned obsolescence, consumers continually throw away used products and purchase replacements. (CO 9) Industry’s profit are at the expense of the environment, which sustains constant production and is constantly absorbing increasing amounts of waste. Industries do not stop there, they also use their wealth and power to influence politicians’ environmental and energy policies as well as the public’s beliefs about environmental issues. (CO 10) An example is in 2009, oil and gas industries spent $175 million on lobbying nearly eight times what pro-environmental groups spent. The conflict perspective is also concerned with environmental injustice (also known as environmental racism) the tendency for marginalized populations and communities to disproportionately experience adversity due to environmental…
Factory pollution effects everyone and everything on this planet. Factories were the first form of pollution with the harsh chemicals that were used it destroyed much of the Ozone layer. Without the Ozone layer there will be nothing to stop the suns rays from heating the earth to outrageous temperatures(Wikipedia). According to McKibben, “not using the latest technology and so spewing: particulates into the air, or maybe sewage into water” (332). The gases and chemical used in these plants kill trees, makes the air unbreathable, and poisons our water supply. According to Hashemi and Farajpour “In countries that produce batteries their pollution cause loss of smell, rotting of teeth, and lung cancer”…
One of the main causes of air pollution is manufacturing. This source of pollution spews particulate matter and chemicals into the atmosphere. The exhaust from a factory includes, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and dioxide, as well as volatile organic compounds and particulates. There is not an area of the Earth’s atmosphere or an ecosystem that has not been altered by the long term effects of the pollution created by manufacturing. Strides have been made to filter the material coming from manufacturing plants, but it may take the Earth millennia to completely recover from the damage already done. (universe)…
There is one Earth. All people who live on it have to share it, not only with those living today, but with those in centuries to come. What is done today will manifest itself tomorrow, affecting someone, somewhere. Many don’t think about their actions because what they do might not affect them in their own lifetime. As Pope Francis said, “We received this world as an inheritance from past generations, but also as a loan from future generations, to whom we will have to return it!” It is easy to harm the environment because many are ignorant of the consequences of their actions, which have become very routine. Changes in the individual mindset can put into motion a chain reaction. One person can influence many others, and one small change can make a big difference. There have been many figures throughout history that have been great examples of how important it is to respond to the call the Pope has made for environmental action and protection. Some influential activists have been Julia Hill and Wangari Maathai, both being very inspiring through their actions. People should heed…
Wave One: Environmentalism- was an environmental revolution that was brought by book “Silent Spring.’ The book was about the danger of chemicals in the environment. The chemical effect was also made on soil, water, wildlife, and man himself. Future generations are unlikely to condone our lack of concern for the natural world that supports all life The First Wave- was between 1970 and 1974, it was driven by grassroots pressures and the power of television, which was forcing the hands of governments, policy makers and also regulators.…
Environmental issues are distributed unevenly across human communities; however, social inequality is inherently important when examining these issues. Social inequality can be linked to the distribution of pollution, the treadmill of production, and overconsumption. Social inequality can also be influential to how society determines what environmental issues actually exist. For instance, individuals, such as minorities, that reside in highly polluted areas are usually concerned about pollution whereas as higher class individuals are not since they are not usually affected by pollution. In this way the distribution of pollution has a greater effect on minorities or third-world nations since they have to deal with pollution on a regular basis.…
Living on this earth is a privilege and unfortunately we sometimes take advantage of it. Stories of deforestation, air and water pollution really make a person think of just how much our planet is being harmed. A major concern is water pollution. Water covers at least 70 percent of the planet which makes our rivers, lakes, and oceans essential. Many of these bodies of water are being polluted and although they may be out of sight, they eventually help pollution increase. Actions should be made to stop the pollution of our waters before things get worse. If we want to decrease the amount of pollution it starts out by increasing the amount of recycling we do. It shouldn’t stop there. Not only should efforts to improve laws against water pollution be made but public awareness¬¬ has to be raised about this issue.…
Moreover, technological breakthroughs seriously affect the ecosystem. In current times, cities are surrounded by high-tech industries producing modern machines and goods which seam to make our lives easier. The truth is that factories pollute the environment by pumping out chemicals that are harmful for all the living things causing the global warming and the acid rain.…
In addition, “as consumers, individuals hold a reservoir of mitigation capacity. Roughly 40 percent of OECD emissions result from decisions by individuals—travel, heating, and food purchases. U.S. households directly account for roughly 35 percent of national CO2 emissions - more in absolute terms than the entire U.S. industrial sector and any other country bar China” (Liverani, 2009). Reflecting on these numbers, the impact that individual behaviors and actions demonstrate the negative consequences people have to the air quality as well as the significant contribution to the climate change problem. However, people must not only be informed, concerned, or understand the problems and issues, the people must act to improve air quality conditions and stop the rapid rate of climate change. People need to accept responsibility for their waste and their emissions. Policy makers have used economic and market mechanism to drive adoption, but this strategy is not all that is needed. Understanding their impact and acting on their impact without financial incentives is crucial to improve the quality of the air we breathe and slow the climate change we are experiencing. New social norms need to be established through effective marketing and communication of the…
It is imperative to realize that with the amount of factories, that were now scattered around the states, there was bound to be various types of pollution that could be harmful to people.…
Conversely, our economy has been based on materialistic resource. Individuals see our environment as a small piece of importance, but they’re wrong. We entirely depend on our environment with everything we do in our daily lives. In the film “The American President’ Leo is unhappy with the environmental issues and is trying to convey his ideas to the president. Individuals who are concerned over our consumption have contributed to recycling, but the percentage of those people are about 4%. The other 96% are continuing to add to our pollution and waste of resource. To make a bigger impact on our environment more than 50% should contribute. Cars and factories play a big role in our pollution, causing Global Warming. People don’t notice the way they take advantage of transportation. Seeing people walk to a 2 min store destination is never seen, people prefer to drive their vehicles. Cutting down trees and destroying environments is not only affecting us,…
Our envirment has been poorly treated by humans for years. It should be everyones job to help take care of our enviroment. Taking care of our enviroment and trying to make our environment healthier is a big job and is something everyone care partake in, but who fights for enviromental injustice. The Environmental Protection Agency or EPA you could say is the main fighter when it comes to fighting for environmental Injustice but are they doing enough and should they be doing more? I think that the EPA should be doing more for fighting for environmental injustice but being that the EPA is an government agency could their view have become distorted by finantional gain. I will be demastrighting what the epa was done for enviromental injustice but more importanly what they are not doing.…
Industrial societies have many factories and vehicles which produce wastes that may poison the land and water. Emissions are also released by many factories which pollutes the air we breathe. The wastes produced by many factories and machines found in modernized societies causes harm to people and nature. The biproducts can create diseases and add to global warming which are both long-term negative effects (372).…
