I consider myself a lifelong student in the sense that education allows one to obtain knowledge that will be shared to continue the endless learning cycle. This doctoral degree will provide me with an academic achievement that will allow me to educate and empower others in the field of mental health. While at Georgia State University I had the opportunity to work with America Corps which allowed me to serve within the Fulton County juvenile court system. My graduate degrees were obtained from Mercer University. I obtained my Master of Science in Community Counseling and Master of Divinity with a specialization in pastoral counseling. I served as a chaplain intern at a level one children’s hospital which provided me with a wealth of knowledge about working with a cultural diverse population and various entities. It provided me the opportunity to see a behind the scenes account of how other professionals within the social services field work within a hospital setting. As a counselor I have the ability to empower those who are marginalized and considered an outcast due to having a mental health diagnosis. It is vital to connect and establish rapport to aid in building a trusting therapeutic relationship. I have witnessed that people are able to connect to someone who is authentic. I have found that it is important in this field to know yourself and being your “true” self is more beneficial to the clients you serve. My clinical skills, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and ability to collaborate with others lend to me being a success in this field. As a therapist and educator it is important to have a holistic view because we are dealing with the most fragile parts of individuals. We want to handle their concerns efficiently and professional.
