Why I M Not Very Effective When It Comes Down To Scrummaging
I’ve chosen to use impulse theory to explain why I’m not very effective when it comes down to scrummaging. Impulse is concerned with the length of time that a force is applied to an object or body, and relates to a change in momentum that occurs as a consequence. In this case, it’s about applying force over the correct period of time so that you can create optimum levels of momentum, so with regards to a scrum, when the ball is put in you should try to put in maximum force over a brief period of time so you have more momentum than your opponents in order to drive the them back and win the ball.
On a graph impulse is shown as force x time. An increase in the amount of force applied, or an increase in the amount of time that the force is applied, will

When I begin to push a scrum I create an impulse that is similar to the equal impulse graph. I do this because my body is in the incorrect position so I am unable to push off the ground and generate a greater positive impulse than I am negative at this stage of the scrum. During the preparation phase as my knees are flexed at 90 degrees instead of around 110 degrees this causes them to be too close to the ground. This meant I was unable to really push off the ground with a moderate amount of power because instead of my legs contracting eccentrically and then immediately concentrically, I was holding them in an isometric eccentric contraction for a long period of time. Instead, I try too hard to push off the ground and this resulted in a weak positive impulse being generated as I push off, then as my foot lands, a strong negative impulse is generated. It was also applied for longer than it should have been in order to increase the force. The positive impulse that follows this is then not large enough to gain enough momentum when pushing in the scrum. This meant that I didn’t produce any momentum going forward so when the ball was
