Why I Pursue My Degree In Mexico-US
Coming from a family who migrated to America illegally, I have adapted a lifestyle of being considerate and embracing consequences. I grew up with the income my parents could have best provide and faced the reality they were going through with my own eyes. At the age of 5, I knew my limitations of asking for something but, I knew deep inside all my parents ever wanted was to provide the best for their three children. Some nights I would hear them being impatient because they did not have enough money to pay the rent, I would hear footsteps come and go as if they were nervous about what would happen if they could not meet the deadline. Other nights my father would drink, I did not understood this at the age of 5 but now, I knew the only reason he would get drunk was to hide the pain of not providing for his family as the way he dreamed back in Mexico. …show more content…

At the age of seven, I escaped the poverty-stricken neighborhood of Paterson, New Jersey because my parents’ priority was their children’s education. So when we moved to Georgia, I was thankful to have a yard, house, even my own room, but each blessing has a curse. Each day I realized why my mother worked at subway, why my father worked at a warehouse, why my mother had to walk 3 ½ miles every day, to and from work, in hot and cold, why my father grew anxious at the sight of a police, why my family could barely travel anywhere, even Atlanta...they were illegal immigrants. Being an anchor baby, I appreciated all the efforts my parents made, like driving me to school early, tutoring, and providing me with their love and support. Years later with the stricter immigration laws, my father got laid when I was in 10th grade and we soon grew very tight on money. Thankful a year…

My name is Julia and I am in my early twenties, and I would have never have imagined that I would one day be going back to school to earn my college degree. My mother and fiancé encouraged me to pursue it, because of my love of art and talking to people, marketing and public relations and that it would be very expensive since I wanted to go to college in America but could not afford it at the time. They were very supportive from the start; my fiancé assisting me in writing notes on flash cards and giving me pop quizzes and my mom reminding me to complete homework assignments when I was busy doing household chores. To me, my life was going great as I advanced further toward my future goals.…

Coming from a low income Hispanic family, I’ve had to overcome different challenges. One thing I recall from my childhood, was enjoying myself from reality. Reality in which no child knows about life and death, bad news and good news, or right from wrong. I still remember when I was upset for quite some time for not celebrating my first birthday party at the age of 4. Instead, at 4 years old, I had to spent my birthday and week at a funeral praying up to two weeks. But then I was finally triggered at the age of 9 when I found out that the man I saw in his casket years ago was no stranger, it was my father. I grew up thinking my father had abandoned my mother and siblings, but never did I consider such thing. As time went by I did not think…

Fortunately, by the fifth grade my parents were able to rent an apartment nearby our school and had found jobs in multiple Brownsville restaurants. After the move, things became much easier and we were able to have a much simpler life, though we were never able to forget the hardships we experienced and the effort we put into enhancing our lives. Today, I am sure my successes as of now are gratifying my parents as I am in the top 10% of my class, the Co-Captain of the Golden Stars Dance Team, member of the National Honor Society, Piano Club, HOSA, and in TRIO UTRGV talent search program. I attend rigorous AP classes to improve my opportunity to attend a university and have the finest future I can give myself. It was the year 2012, when I experienced a life-changing event, which led to my transition from childhood into adulthood. This event was my parent’s divorce. During this time I was scared and hurt, because my parents’ separation not only meant the parting of my parents-but parting from the life I’ve always known as a child. The separation moved at an almost mockingly lackadaisical pace. Months tediously dragged on, and even after the legal separation my life was never as it once was. I started to appreciate the people who were present in my life and how precious family stability is. The idea of losing my mother or father to divorce made me realize that this could have easily been a loss due to an illness. I grew to appreciate that I am lucky to have them in my life period. It was at this time that I seriously thought about working in health care; a field that aims to prolong human lives. This event of my childhood that some might even call traumatic, bettered me, and brought me into the adult world.…

I experienced the biggest change in my life when I was 10 years old which I believe turned my whole life around from a person prone to failure and disappointments to a person who exceeded personal goals. My family and I immigrated to America to have a better life and a better future. I have 2 sisters and 1 brother. Being the youngest of the four my parent’s didn’t expect anything less from me. My parent’s sacrifice extra long hours of work just so we can all attend the appropriate education to succeed in life. Unfortunately I was a failing student with not much of interest in school. The only reason why I attended school was to see my friends and play during our break time. In class I would get in trouble for talking much and not listening to lectures. I did not excel in Math, Literature or Science, but I love finishing first in Physical Education whatever the activity may have been. On the first of August 1997 my parent’s received an important envelope. The envelope consists of a letter stating that our sponsors from America had been approved to bring us to the states, I knew this letter would change my life forever.…
