Personal Narrative: My Parent's Divorce
It was the year 2012, when I experienced a life-changing event, which led to my transition from childhood into adulthood. This event was my parent’s divorce. During this time I was scared and hurt, because my parents’ separation not only meant the parting of my parents-but parting from the life I’ve always known as a child. The separation moved at an almost mockingly lackadaisical pace. Months tediously dragged on, and even after the legal separation my life was never as it once was. I started to appreciate the people who were present in my life and how precious family stability is. The idea of losing my mother or father to divorce made me realize that this could have easily been a loss due to an illness. I grew to appreciate that I am lucky to have them in my life period. It was at this time that I seriously thought about working in health care; a field that aims to prolong human lives. This event of my childhood that some might even call traumatic, bettered me, and brought me into the adult world.

The biggest things that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood are overcoming the abrupt changes of my lifestyle after my parents’ divorce. I learned how to balance my school and home life, prioritize and focus. I may not have learned this to the same extent of understanding, had my parents not divorced in my adolescence. It was through witnessing their divorce from a primary perspective that I realized how important key people in my life are and how it feels to lose family stability. Love may only metaphorically come from the heart, but the heart symbolizes the importance of life, relationships, and love. The love for my family is the overall factor that has shaped my dreams in life, for this reason the “heart” is why I have a strong devotion to study to be a cardiovascular surgeon, so I may continue to help others maintain their family

My personal nursing mission statement is changing and developing as my career advances, however, one core piece will remain constant. I will strive to provide the best, safest, most ethical and compassionate nursing care that I can for all patients and family members with whom I come in contact. I began my post-high school academic career as an accounting major. I enjoyed the challenge of manipulating a report until I had balanced. I thought I had found my calling. As my first semester was nearing an end, I found myself contemplating the thought of sitting behind a desk all day. I wondered if I would find fulfillment in this work as a career? The more I pondered this thought, the more I realized that this was not the right career path for me. I saw images of the medical assistant program in the catalog at the school where I was attending. I could not shake the thought of the medical field for a profession. I attained my medical assistant degree and worked in the field for 10 years. The longer I worked, the more I realized that there was more that I wanted to do, but my current degree restricted me from going further. I researched nursing school programs and selected one with a night/weekend program that would allow me to continue working full-time during my studies. I have a family that I needed to continue to provide for and this seemed to be the best fit. My nursing school decision was fortified when I was selected for an award by the nursing faculty from all four semesters for excellence in the clinical setting. After graduation, I began my nursing career working as a case manager for orthopedic worker’s compensation patients. During this time I gained critical knowledge of the importance of clear documentation, the ever-changing requirements of insurance companies and an extra measure of compassion for…

Healthcare abounds with occupations dedicated to serving a variety of populations. Each profession has distinct qualities that warrant specific talents. As the daughter of a Registered Nurse, I saw first-hand the characteristics nursing required. Though I enjoyed learning about the human body, I knew nursing was not my calling. My initial educational goals and work experience were directed towards becoming a marriage and family therapist. After I finished my Associate's degree and married, I postponed my education to focus on raising my children. During this period, I judiciously considered my career options as I transitioned from a young woman focused on discovering her purpose to a wife and mother with a family depending on her guidance, support, and affection. Switching gears at this point seemed daunting because the risks transcended the investment of time and money. The requirements to successfully complete…

Due to a nurse, an angle at the children's hospital at UNC Chapel Hill. Filled with joy she empowered me, on a day when I was afraid of the unknown. The same nurse put me to sleep for my second bone biopsy giving me the hope to push for the next day no matter the lab results. Since then I have pursued the healthcare service trying to learn and hopefully being able to give back the hope and joy that I received. At my current age, I have learned that life is not easy. All people will face obstacles which are out of their control that will challenge their faith. Each individual has the choice to rise after the disaster and make the best of the situation. During my youth, I discovered the resilience inside of myself. Finding confidence and courage to keep fighting, pushing forward. I view it as looking for the rainbow at the end of a storm, but not dwelling on the downside of the storm, staying focused on the positive future ahead. Currently I’m thankful to report that I am a happy and health senior at Brevard High School. At my current age of seventeen the difficulties of managing my health has dissipate leading to the exciting news of being cleared by my…

Due to my upbringing in a predominantly rich, christian neighborhood I didn’t feel like anyone would understand my abusive parents or try to help. When I got kicked out I was sure that was the end of the line for me.…

When my mom and stepdad had to work, I would take care of them until they came back while getting my schoolwork and practicing my instrument done too. I never really had a chance to be a kid, I always had to be a mother to my siblings. Living with an alcoholic father changed the atmosphere in the house; therefore, changed my beliefs with God. Whereas wondering why was I born into this family? With every star, comes a tear. Like rolling thunder, like rolling anger. Being destructive like a tornado. Breathing hard like a hurricane. Being hot like the sun, I become a meteor from the sky.
