Why I Want To Play Clarinet
Plato once said, “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” My passion for music began at a young age. Hearing Chopin’s Ballade no.1 in G-minor was life changing to me. Whereas this may seem cliché, the unique textures, rhythms, and chord structure kept me on my toes. Because of that one experience, I took an interest in music. At the time, I insisted greatly on playing the piano. Unfortunately, we weren’t fortunate enough to pay for lessons or to even purchase a piano. In result, I chose to play clarinet. During my sixth grade year, I practiced vigorously to earn the spot of being first chair. Throughout my sixth and seventh grade years, my band class would have chair tests to see who was the most …show more content…
It’s the voice of the universe. Advancing into high school, practicing clarinet became rare due to being chosen as a drum major during marching band. As a result, every year during the fall, I was unable to play. However, in time for concert season I would be the first to audition for region band. Region band is a competition consisting of every musician playing the assigned piece and scales to visualize who are the more mature players. With the exception of freshmen year, I made region and occasionally area. However, my passion for music grew to a more classical texture. A portion of society thinks of rap or pop when they hear the word music. Music in my terms is classical. Growing up listening to classical piano, I was able to perceive the emotion themed in the piece. For example the piece that I mentioned earlier was Chopin’s Ballade no. 1 in G-Minor. Throughout the nine minutes of complexity are depression, hatred, happiness, loss of hope. Every song has it’s own story. Music to me is truly the sound of the universe for without it, we are nothing. There would be no sound, no emotion. Music is what brings us to

Music has always been a very important part of my life. As a child, I was mesmerized by Disney’s Fantasia 2000 and watched the Disney sing-a-longs over and over. I began playing piano at a young age, and in middle school added more instruments to my list, such as flute, saxophone, and ukulele. I have had many opportunities to perform both solos and ensemble performances, but none of them have impacted me as much as my interactions with an elderly man named Mr. Roland Goff, or as we called him in my church, Brother Goff. When I was in 5th grade, I played a piano song in church entitled A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief. A couple years later, Brother Goff’s wife passed away and my family started spending more time with him. He told me he remembered the song I played in 5th grade and how much he loved it. I had many other opportunities to play in church as well, and he remembered and enjoyed each of them. It was then that I started…

I wanted to be like all my other friends and play the clarinet, but instead I was chosen to play the flute. I did not understand at first why Mr. Peirce wanted me to play the flute, I thought it was complicated and would be difficult to function. We started by fingering and playing one note at a time repeatedly until each note was well played. Next, we started playing notes together to make sure we knew how to go from one to the other smoothly. Lastly, we learned scales, also known as playing the letters of the staff up then down. Soon after having these lessons of learning how to finger the notes and how to correctly blow in my mouth piece, I realized it was much easier then it looked. After a year, I was moved into the high school band. There were a small number of flutes, so we had to play very loud. We started by learning small songs. By playing a new song every day, I started to memorize the keys which made playing much easier. As the months passed Mr. Peirce placed a music piece in front of us known as “Bella’s Lullaby”. I was then ecstatic! Bella’s Lullaby was the piece played in one of my favorite movies, Twilight. It took us weeks to learn and another to perfect. After learning the piece I finally knew what it felt like to hear music speak. The piece was full of emotion including a lot of crescendo and decrescendo. Meanwhile, after finishing the song, Mr. Peirce thought that it should be played amongst an audience. We were to invite all our family and friends to what we called a concert. After playing the piece, along with other small pieces that we learned, we were given a round of applause. That night, Mr. Peirce awarded me with the “Most Improved…

After testing out a wide range of instruments from the trombone to the guitar, I finally found one that fit my personality: the clarinet. What is music? The art of self-expression that goes beyond simple speech; the proper blending of sound waves to create optimal wave oscillation; the transcendent joy of collective individualism; the use of the notes c-c’ in structured order to build melody, harmony, counterpoint and tonality—perhaps music is something impossible to completely define and understand. Music manifests itself differently to each and every person, revealing rapturous joy, desperate love or grey death and helping humanity cope with the struggles and joys of life. Yet although no one would argue that music’s main focus is emotion, there is a system of interpretation by which music can be logically realized, quantified and rationalized: such a method is called music theory.…

As a little girl I wanted to be just like Hannah Montana. As I got older, I wanted to be like Rachel Berry, a small town girl living out a big town dream. I wanted to be looked up to because of my musical talent. Walking into Mrs. Kaiser's 7th hour, 8th grade band, I didn't know that music would have such an impact in my life. Music has become the spark of my intellectual curiosity. There are millions of combinations of key signatures, chords, melodies and rhythm in the world of music just waiting to become attached to a sheet of staff lines and spaces. Ever since my first experience with music in the fourth grade, my mind began to explore all these combinations of problems. Music helped me with math, english and gave me a place to escape when I was put into undesirable situations. In Middle…

Walking into the band room for the first time, the sound of every instrument being poorly played by fourth graders suffocated the room. The squeal of saxophones and blaring bass of tubas made it impossible to hear the instructions being given by the band director. However, none of that mattered to me. All I could do was to stare at the only thing in the room that was able to grasp my attention: a shiny, red drum set. I migrated to the back corner of the room where it sat unoccupied, took my place on the stool, picked up some sticks, and immediately felt at home. At that moment, it was clear to me that playing music was what I was meant to do.…

Music is perhaps what structured the young man I have become today. From a young age, I have always had a passion for music, especially performing it, so I decided to join percussion in 6th grade for school band. There, I was able to capture the joy I had of performing for others. I thrived so much through performing, so I continued to play percussion up to my senior year of high school. However, during this time, I was going through a year long abusive relationship that took a major toll on my skill. Most people have heard the science: making music makes a person smarter. In practice, however, the true significance of music’s impact not only in our academic lives but in our personal character is immense. The day I chose to play the clarinet in fifth grade beginning band, I did not choose music because I wanted to be smarter, or better disciplined, or because I wanted to develop compassion and empathy for others. Instead, I chose the clarinet because I liked the way it sounded and my friends begged me to join with them. Even before the end of my first year of playing, however, both my parents and I had noticed a huge difference in the way I carried myself and in the quality of my academic performance. I began to have a genuine love for music, which motivated me to excel.…

Music has always been a part of us ever since the begging of time. It’s been with us threw the happy, great times and also for the not so happy bad times. We can express ourselves with music by telling a story with in the lyrics and even with the beat showing, telling how we are feeling. Music is a five letter word that could mean so much to one person, while meaning so little to somebody else. To me, music is where I flourish; music is where I learn to find myself and learn to understand others. I get so lost in music, both listening and playing, that I find myself absent from my own reality for hours on end. Listening to music is mesmerizing, in a sense, in which I always find myself discovering new and intriguing genres, sounds and musicians. Music is so captivating to me because there is always something new and exciting to find; nothing is ever the same. For instance, nobody has the same exact voice while singing or the same exact style of bass playing. Similarly, there are always different renditions of songs to play on various different instruments. Being both a piano player and a guitar player, learning how to perform a song and perfecting it is an incredibly fulfilling feeling, in the least. Another reason that music is easily entrapping to me is because it is encompassed with deeper, unknown meaning. I take a passionate interest in the backstory of bands, their members and the significance of their lyrics. Autobiographies unveiling information about band members, such as Journals by Kurt…
