Why Is Amy Winehouse Important
Amy Winehouse was one of the most popular singer/songwriters of all time. She broke the record for the most awards for a female artist when she won five Grammy awards in 2008. She also won two BRIT awards for her music. Despite her success, she continued to be in the media for erratic behavior with her drug and alcohol abuse and multiple run-ins with the law. But, her music is still influential today and she is still a icon in popular culture.

The album hit platinum status and win two BRIT awards (Amy Winehouse, 2017). Her second album, Back to Black, was very successful as well going platinum five times and was the bestselling album of 2007 in the United Kingdom. Her album also expanded to the United States when it hit higher on the Billboard music charts than any other female British artist who had released their album in the United States ever. She claimed it was a mix of cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine, whisky, and vodka during an event in London. Her management team decided to cancel her North American tour in early 2007 so she could address and rest from these health issues. In the fall of 2007, her European tour kicked off. But in October of 2007, Winehouse and her husband were arrested for marijuana possession in her hotel in western Norway. The pair was released after paying $715 in fines to Norwegian police. Approximately a month later, Fielder-Civil was arrested again for paying off a bartender who he supposedly assaulted. Winehouse did go on with her performance that night but, she struggled to sing because of the distress of her husband’s imprisonment. Within the next month, Winehouse was arrested for suspicious activity dealing with her husband’s investigation.
