Charlemagne was a medieval emperor. He ruled during the time known as the Middle Ages which was from 500 A.D. to 1000 A.D. This time period is also called the Dark Ages. The Dark Ages were named that because we are not exactly sure what life was like during this time period because of the little information we have. The people in Western Europe had many different religions.
Charlemagne was born into the Frank tribe which was a German tribe living in the area of northwest Europe. Charlemagne became a German king before he became the Emperor of Western Europe. 982 A.D. The first European settlement was founded by Leif Eriksson. The settlement was established in Greenland in 982 A.D. Eriksson was a Viking captain. He called it Greenland so more people would follow him in search of a better life. The land was the opposite, it was bleak and barren.
The knar Vikings boats were strong, flexible and designed to handle the open seas. The Viking boats sailed the North Atlantic and had been the first European explorers to explore the Vinland which would be eventually be known as America. The Greenland settlement started the migration of people out of Europe and into other parts of the world. Europeans needed to explore other parts of the world to find fertile land that would supply them with a better life and what they needed to survive. The world expanded as more settlements were established over periods of time. Most people today come from many different heritages. My entire ethnic heritage originates from Europe. I am Polish, German, and Irish. It is amazing how many heritages people have. Having family members that came from different parts of the world is so fascinating. It is amazing how the world ties altogether.

Tthe announcement that he made was that the children of Christendom would win Jerusalem for Christ. They would win through the innocence and clarity. He was not the only one who came forward with a story like this. Another boy named Nicholas had a similar message. In the summer of that year they started their journey known as the children’s crusade. Apparently their journey ended when the children started to die because of starvation and disease. The children of France and Germany wanted to prove that they could conquer Jerusalem if they put their faith in God. The children that went on this journey were from ages four to seventeen. Their parents were afraid to let go of them because they knew what could possibly happen to their kid. Some parts of the world today do not believe in Christianity. People can be punished or even killed if they believe in Christ. These children were willing to fight for Christianity. They were extremely brave to take a risk like that. The children were looking out for their
