A food desert is an area where low income residents have limited access to affordable and nutritious food. Englewood has just recently built a Whole Food’s market on 63rd street. Whole Foods ;however, is one of the most expensive wholesale food markets in America. They charge higher than any other store because of its fresh produce, but if they would look at the area do they believe that was the best place to build it. Englewood is one of the most impoverished areas in Chicago: homeless living on every corner, foreclosed homes, and low income is a norm. They place more fast food because it’s cheaper and it appeals to the consumers currency availability. In Lake View, there is almost a fresh and affordable produce market on every block. Englewood’s enviorment is irksome so that when people hear “Englewood” they cringe. Many are afraid to enter into the “hood”, but if you told them to go to Lake View they gladly will. Each environment has adolescents. Adolescents reenact what they see, therefore it’s the surroundings rub off on the children. Most likely if you grow up in Lake View you imitate the simplicity of life, as oppose to Englewood were you imitate gangs and violence. In Lake View, people have more respect for others and their property, while in Englewood people don’t care who you are or what you got. So our adolescents are growing up in these environments and carry on the “tradition” dare I say of these habits. This is why some our neighborhoods are at a downfall due to the image set for the younger generation. Always remember you’re a reflection of your
