“ The River-Merchant’s Wife: A Letter” , “Nothing Gold can Stay”, and “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” are modernist works. “The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner and Night are contemporary works. Modernism is modern thought, character, or practice. It is the modernist movement in the arts, the sets cultural tendencies and associated cultural movements. Elisa Allen in Steinbeck's "The Chrysanthemums" and Louise Mallard in Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" have a great deal in common because of the fact that they both went through similar struggles. Both Elisa and Louise prove to be strong women that clearly had dreams of their own such as being equal to men and having a passionate relationship with a man. Although that may be true, they lacked resemblance in the true desire they each yearned for.…
Change is inevitable, man-made environments are changing all the time, people are getting higher, living in apartments and skyscrapers, human subconscious perspective is changing the world. Towards the end of the 19th century, newly creative forces were emerging, which looked forward and sought after innovation and originality in design. Seemingly endless reworkings of decorative design was overused and unambiguously discarded as fresh ideas along with new technologies and materials began to saturate into the beginning of the 20th century. The developed western world was seeing a new age and the birth of modernism . The term modernism and its meaning has formed much debate but it widely regarded as a shared aesthetic or ideological manifesto. As an interpretive concept, it may be applied to art, music or cultural and scientific expressions, not just design .…

War is a catalyst for social change. This is very clear among the movement of Modernism, which was amid between the two bloodiest wars WW1 and WW2. This then resulted in the modernistic motto“ Make It New”. Modernism was a movement that caused a drastic change in all aspects of the arts. Literature had new, intriguing qualities that broke away from the long developed traditions. It also incorporated new concepts such as devaluing the importance of certain things in society, Symbolism and the conception of a modern hero.…
In the first reading “Modernist Painting” Greenberg describes Modernism as being a method in which a discipline is used to criticize the discipline itself, for instance using logic to criticize logic and in doing so defining its limits. Greenberg considers the philosopher Kant to be the first real Modernist by being the first person to be known to do this.…
The main suspects at this time are Ben Hill, Michelle Shelton, Candie Harris, Sam MacCarty, and Phil Ackers. The red flags in this case deal primarily with a lack in segregation of duties. These suspects all juggle multiple roles, some of which are not listed in their job description. Some of these suspects actively seek out additional responsibilities and place themselves in roles where they probably do not belong. Further rationalization for choosing these suspects is outlined below.…
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts suggests, the term modernism commonly applies to those forward looking architects, designers and artisans who, from the 1880’s on, forged a new and diverse vocabulary principally to escape historicism, the tyranny of previous historical styles.…
I do not agree with Clement Greenberg definitions of modernism, in his essay ‘Modernist Painting’. Because it is wrong to place artistic limits on artistic expression, whether that is painting, sculpture or any other artistic work. As Manet’s sad “art for art sack”. Single person cannot be permitted to make decision on what good art is. In doing so he took away the freedom to explore, and once needed, push the boundaries of what they are working with. Clement Greenberg would strongly disagree with my perspective. Because his study throughout his career included many artistic methods, in this essay, he is primarily concerned with ‘Modernist Painting’.…
Modernism was first called avant-garde. Two major impacts in this movement were impressionism and symbolism. Impressionism mainly focused on light as the emphasis because it was believed people did not see object but rather light itself. Symbolism was used ideally for capturing reality and complexity in paintings. Those movements lead artists into a new inspiration and thinking of another form of art. Outside the norm of painting of people and landscapes, the realization came that people actually saw more than light in art. World War I led to even a new thinking for artists and to what we call the modernism movement. This modern art was simply unified by geometric shapes and abstract expressions by artists becoming established in 1930 (Wikipedia® The Free…

Modernism in art is rejecting the past and it’s a “relentless quest for radical freedom of expression” (says my copy of “The Annotated Mona Lisa”). In western culture, before the scientific revolution or the Age of Enlightenment, most subjects/ themes of paintings were the daily lives of upper/middle class people, the nobility, Christianity, and landscapes. Also the paintings then stressed realism. That totally changed until the 19th century where artistic movements like fauvism, impressionism, and a whole lot of other “isms” sprung up and eventually paved the pathway to Modern Art. Already in the 19th century with artists like Manet with his infamous piece Olympia, were people touching upon ways to show sexuality in art which was kind of vulgar back then. I guess the uptightness of society, really had something to do with the people’s desire for radical freedom of expressions. Also people’s views were changing during the Modern era, especially the view on women and we have feminists like Virginia Woolf and the women’s suffrage movement to thank for that. Overall, the economy, the current events back then, people’s view on religion; feminism; how people talked about sex and sexuality [thanks to Alfred Kinsey]; technology; innovation; and new ways of expression all made…
