When reading the play “Othello”by World Renown Poet and Playwright William Shakespeare, the characters that he has presented us with have characteristics of many varieties.
He has developed these characters with distinct roles to show how much determination and focus can help achieve by overcoming the obstacles that stand before them by any means necessary. This characteristic, in the words of the author Angela duckworth who is a psychology professor, is known as Grit. During her research, she defines grit as enduring obstacles to reach a certain goal or mastery. In the Playwright, the characters display grit by relentlessly pushing to achieve their goals. His achievement is not that he survived conflict in battle in a spectacularly successful manner, but rather ending up as one of the most powerful men in the Venetian Defense. “Excellent Wretch! Perdition catch my soul But I do love thee! And when I love thee not, Chaos is come again.” ( Shakespeare, Pg. 123, Act 3, Sc.3). The text talks about how without Desdemona; the women in which Othello is in love with: his life would be complete chaos. Even though Othello can be seen as a person with a respectable amount of Grit, one would say that he has a Fixed Mindset. This is because Othello is a “Moor” which was known as a member of a Muslim people of Berber and Arab descent living in Northwest Africa. Since he was a man of color in a place where color was frowned upon, Othello felt socially insecure which gave him a fixed mindset.
