Because of this most femeales spend hours in salon’s or someone’s home getting their hair done. Natural hair is hair is unaltered by chemicals and is worn in its natural state. Shampoo has cleaning agents that strip the hair of the “Sebum” which is important in protecting the hair which leaves it broke off and damaged while Conditioner helps to add and also keep moisture in the hair strands to keep the hair from breaking. With natural hair types, you have to wash your hair less often, condition your hair more, limit the use of heat, and style it appropriately. On the other hand, Relaxed hair can be styled however.
Not every “natural” woman wears her hair in the stereotypical styles like dreads, braids, twists, afros and etc. Some black women style their hair with low heat so that they don’t have to deal with the strong chemicals of relaxers. Relaxed hair is praised for its straighter texture that leads to more choices in styling and less work involved in achieving styles. The truth of the matter is that regardless of how black women wear their hair, the nature of the hair causes it to be more prone to damage than any other

This, according to Malcolm’s criticism, was how white imprisoned the Blacks mentally, and that this was even worse than the physical nature of slavery itself (47-48). In order to combat this, Blacks have to learn to love their own appearance. For the African-Americans today, they still struggle with the same concept of beauty, body image, and hair of the past. As Jones and Shorter-Gooden argued, “Not every woman who decides to straighten her hair or change the color of her eyes by wearing contacts believes that beauty is synonymous with whiteness” (178). Basically, black women are experimenting, even with hairs that are associated with European styles, to spark an expression of creativity or for employment reasons (Tracey, Owens Patton,…

Each day many people around the world alter their hair chemically using chemical relaxers and perms. When a person with curly hair desires straight hair they get relaxers which has the key ingredient sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Sodium Hydroxide breaks down the hair bonds in textured hair with an end result of straight hair. A hair relaxer is so strong that in order to bring your hair back to a normal state of its original curliness is to cut the relaxed hair so new bonds can reform. Perms are commonly used by white women (as well as men) with straight hair. A chemical called ammonium thioglycollate which is a solution of salt, thioglycolic acid and ammonia (HSCH2COO− + NH4+ ⇌ HSCH2COOH + NH3) activates to create wave…
