Statement: Humor in the workplace is always beneficial for relieving stress and bringing co -workers together, however it can also produce negative effects resulting in a decrease in productivity.
Body: 1. Ways Humor Can Help In The Workplace A. Stress Relief 1.
It can help with the issues you bring to work that shouldn't be involved. a. Such as your girlfriend called you fat so now you are self conscious and cant get it off of your mind. 2. The relief of stress will make you capable of working harder and seeing more results in your work. a. The more relaxed and stress free you are the better you will work B. Bringing co-workers together 1. Humor often "breaks the ice" when it comes to first meeting someone or having tension with another. a. An awkward handshake occurs and you follow it up with a joke that makes you both laugh and get comfortable 2. Humor can make relationships stronger so co-workers would work together more as a team rather than separate individuals. a. A tough project is at stake and a simple cartoon video related to what you are doing helps you keep calm and know its alright. C. Decrease In Productivity 1. Often too much humor can result in a "no care attitude" causing you to me lazy and not productive. Too much monkeying around. a. also. 2. The business will slow in productivity as a result of its employees not working as hard. a. Less work = less money. Your business will suffer in numbers if employees are lazy. D.
When to Use Humor 1. In time of decreased moral. To cheer someone up if they are having a bad time. a. Someone had a bad start to their day and you cheer them up with a joke that makes them see their situation differently. 2. When things get repetitive or boring. a. The same thing over and over can be boring. Your assembling shoes and humor related to your work eases your mind and keeps it off the repeating process. E. When not to use Humor 1. When it has become an issue. IE too much use of humor a. Too much of it can cause people to become uncomfortable or mad about the lack of commitment from an employee. 2. In times of serious moments that involve focus or attention a. Someone died in the workplace and you decide to tell a stupid joke. F. How to use Humor 1. Thinking before you speak a. Don't blurt out the first thing you think, play it back twice or three times in your head before saying it because you never know who you could offend 2. Knowing when its important to leave it out a. Often when something is bugging someone and they seriously want your help with the problem, don't joke about it because they came to you with their guards down looking for your
guidance. G. How not to use Humor 1. Racial or pre-judgmental remarks a. Racist jokes are always a "no-go" in the workplace. They are very offensive and saying insulting things about ones life or background is rude. 2. Physical or self- image jokes. a. If someone is over weight, just let them be. Nothing you do or say can change that and it can really break a person down even if they might seem like it didn't hurt them or if they laughed with you.
Transition:
So now that you know what humor can offer to you as a person, lets talk about the ways it is used, and not used in the workplace.
