Firstly, the novel takes place in Warings which is isolated from all the other houses. This is demonstrated when the house is described as being ‘some distance from any other house.’ Hooper is isolated from other children and other people. This means that he lacks experience with other children and thus he doesn’t know how to act with other people his age.

Hooper’s father obviously has no idea how to take care of his child and this is shown when he says that he doesn’t know whether to ‘strike’ Hooper or not. This links with how Mr Hooper knows nothing about Hooper. Which is demonstrated when he tells Hooper that he ‘must not be afraid’ when Hooper was about to see his dead grandfather. If Mr Hooper knew his son well enough he would know that Hooper wasn’t lying when he said that he is ‘never afraid.’ Hooper lacks love and affection at home which could have an effect on his actions and on his perception of right and wrong as no one has been there to teach him what it right and what is wrong. He also doesn’t have a mother figure as she died before the novel starts. Therefore Hooper has relied on his father for love and it is evident that Mr Hooper hasn’t given him any. This is shown when he taunts Kingshaw after his traumatic experience with the crow by saying that ‘[he was] scared, [he was] running away.’ Instead of being nice and comforting to Kingshaw he exploits Kingshaw’s vulnerable state through verbal insults and makes him feel inferior. Additionally, Hoopers reaction to the prospect of psychologically torturing Kingshaw is abnormal. This is demonstrated when he says that ‘he could not have imagined the excitement it afforded him…thinking of things he could do to Kingshaw…’ The use of ‘excitement’ shows Hoopers weird reaction to the thought of causing Kingshaw pain. This reaction is strange and could be perceived as Hooper showing how he lacks a feeling of right and
