He was the first African American to play in the Major League Baseball. He was also part of the Black Panthers Tank Battalion during WWII, but he never got to fight because he didn’t not get off the military bus when the bus driver told him to do so, so he was later charged with offenses, even with those which weren’t true. He started playing baseball in the Negro Leagues and then moved up to the minor leagues, but was mostly segregated from his team. Then in 1947 he was called up to play in the major leagues. He was part of the start of the start of the Civil Rights Movement.

They were supposed to go to Little Rock Central High School, but on their first day, they were not allowed to come inside, so President Eisenhower had to intervene. This whole thing started with the Blossom Plan, which is a plan to desegregate schools in Little Rock, but many citizens of Little Rock did not approve so they blocked the school entrances and wouldn’t let the nine students go in, but then Eisenhower provided soldiers to protect them and help them get into the school. This will also be part of the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement.
25. Civil Rights Commission (September 9, 1957)
This commission was created by the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and its job was to investigate discrimination in the nation. This organization also discourages discrimination and focuses on protection of equal laws. They don’t just work with race, but they also work on religion, sex, age, disability, and national origin.
26. National Defense Education Act (September 2, 1958)
The act provided funding to education at all levels. It was instated because of the space race with the USSR and the United States wanted their students to focus on math and the sciences. It helped create NASA and other science organizations.
