It was clear from the start that even as an apprentice he had an amazing talent. You could see his genius in several of the pieces that came out of the workshop even when he was an apprentice. Probably his first big break was to paint an angel the painting by Verrocchio called the Baptism of Christ. Supposedly, da Vinci was so much better than Verrocchio that Verrocchio supposedly said that he would never paint again. As such, da Vinci was forced to find a new patron to support his art and studies. After the invasion by the French and Ludovico Sforza's fall from power in 1499, Leonardo was left to search for a new patron. During the next 16 years da Vinci spent his time working for many different employers. Some of his employers were not so wonderful such as Cesare Borgia. He worked for Borgia as a military engineer and traveled with his army. During this time he designed a bridge to cross over the golden horn in Constantinople and painted the Battle of Anghiari.
