Did you know that 40% of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of sleep for their age group. Many of these people do not believe that sleeping and napping are very important to their health due to their hectic life’s and routines. Sleeping is essential to the human body, while napping is beneficial as well.
To begin, napping is not as critical as sleeping, but is still very beneficial. Napping can benefit all age groups on a daily basis. Napping can also be very beneficial to many professions that have unusual job schedules including astronauts, firemen, police officers, and many medical professions. Taking short naps can help you in an abundance of medical ways to! For example, recent studies tested students taking a 45 minute nap after a mental stress test and an average amount of the students had lower blood pressure after the test and taking a nap. “After a nap, people tend to be happier and more alert. They do better work and avoid mistakes (Source 2, Paragraph 19).” Nappers may have better long term health than non-nappers. …show more content…
To continue, sleep is not optional, it is vital to your health.
A lack of sleep or bad sleeping habits can result to negative affects to your health. “Sleep deficiency can affect people even if you may or may not get the total amount of sleep recommended for your age group (Source 1, Paragraph 8).” Many people neglect their sleeping needs and it affects them horribly in the long run. For example, every person has an “internal clock”; these internal clocks work hourly and act somewhat like shift workers. When they get disrupted frequently the internal clock gets mixed signals and gets thrown off by many hours due to their privation of sleep. Without sleep many people begin to become drowsy making them not be able work at a higher level that they are capable
of. Lastly, you cannot “catch-up” on lost sleep. “If you routinely lose sleep or choose to sleep less than needed, the sleep loss adds up. The total sleep lost is called your sleep debt (Source 1, Paragraph 2).”Every person eventually builds up their “sleep debt”, which is the hours built up of lost sleep over time. Sleeping when your body is ready too is very important, because of many reasons. One reason for that would be that if you go to sleep to early it will throw you internal clock off (as stated in previous paragraph).Another reason for this would be that, if you go to sleep to late overtime your health will be majorly affected. Even though naps may seem to relief people for their loss of sleep, it does not really help the person rebuild for their lost sleep. In conclusion, sleeping is critical to the human body, whereas napping is advantageous as well. Although many people believe naps are only for children of young age they are actually very beneficial to all ages. Also, sleep is not optional in most cases, it is vital to your health. Finally, even though most believe this is true because it somewhat relieves them, you cannot catch up on lost sleep. Sleeping will forever be an essential part of humans living a healthy life, while napping will always come a close second.
