Opera: Timeless or Timed out
What is Opera's appeal? what makes it timeless as an art form? However, is it now as timeless as it once was? According to Leon Boutstein a writer for The Musical Quarterly “ out of all traditions in classical music of the western world opera has been the longest lasting of these art forms. … Despite in popular culture it being viewed as a representation of lavish wealth (Musical Quarterly 2015)”. Another important factor that Leon Boutstein points out is that in the eighteenth century “...opera became a form of official art, as it was used to promote ideals during such time as the French Revolution (notes from the Editor, The Future of Opera)”. There are many groups of critics that say because these groups are not solely opera they should not be considered but it is a possibility that these groups help to promote opera and many people who normally do not know what Turandot is but they may know the iconic Nessun Dorma because it was perform by pavarotti and friend, Andrea Bocelli, and countless others such as Jackie Evancho and Celtic women. According to David Leigh “being an opera singer at the Metropolitan opera himself, he writes that many opera singers are trained to hate the sound that Andrea Bocelli makes when he sings (who is the biggest hack in your field 2013)”. Many who listen to Bocelli are not opera singers themselves so many of us can not say if what Leigh says is in fact true. However, this brings up the question if Bocelli is not perfect for the opera image then why does he help promote it? Why is he considered one of the best and most known figures in today's representation of the art form? This maybe a big indicator of why the opera community begrudgingly lets Andrea Bocelli represent this community because they know that through his mix of
