They wondered whom she would marry and when she would marry. They thought that she would get married and have children but she had no interest in sharing power with a spouse. She spoke to Parliament, “I have already joined myself in marriage to a husband namely the kingdom of England” ("ELIZABETH I QUOTES."). Many Catholics thought she was not good enough for the throne because she was a female, not married and did not have any kids but she proved them all wrong. Elizabeth became supreme Governor of the Church of England. The Catholics believed that her cousin Mary, the Queen of Scots should have been Queen of England. Her cousin schemed against her and made great threats but eventually she had to ask Queen Elizabeth for help when her kingdom was falling apart. Queen Elizabeth put her cousin Mary in prison, it was a kind of way to protect her. All of that ended after twenty years because of Mary’s involvement in the Babington Plot of 1586. It was assumed that she took part in it. Queen Elizabeth really did not want to execute her cousin. The public looked deep into the situation, which gave her no other choice.
