When I was younger, I was taught that people of color were treated horribly wrong by whites and over a period of time everything changed for the better, and we all lived happily ever after. As I grew older, I obviously realized the world was far from perfect and discrimination is still happening today. It did not take me long to realize because discrimination was not hidden. People are openly racist in many ways. Being followed around a store to keep an eye on you is a common one that I have experienced myself. This is not as aggressive as what others have experienced. People have been yelled at and physically assaulted by strangers because of their sexual orientation, skin color or religion. Why is it not treated the same? Self-segregation is equally as bad as discrimination because people are setting themselves apart from others for one reason or another. There should be no reason for you to separate yourself from someone because of their ethnic, sexual or religious background. By doing so you are only slowing down the process of America truly becoming equal. “Every white person isn’t bad and every black person is not good” (Buckner 1).
