Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. The first set of soccer rules were created in London, England in 1863, but the sport was played long before that, for recreation. Bill Shankly a Scottish soccer player once said, “Some people believe soccer is a matter of life and death...it is much, much more important than that.” Shankly’s quote is the general feeling throughout the world about the game of soccer. Saying soccer is a game in most parts of the world is incorrect…it is a lifestyle and undoubtedly the one number sport. The Galaxy had cut Seck from his contract due to the fact he could not play and it was unsure how he would recover. Ever since the injury Seck has been coaching youth soccer for CVU and college soccer at California State University, Northridge and Cal Lutheran University. He also graduated from the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California, and now speaks fluent English, French, and Spanish. Due to Seck’s life involving soccer, he is very reliable source on the subject of why soccer is not popular in America. Soccer is a very low- scoring sport, which could be a large reason why Americans have lost interest in the sport. Americans watch sports like basketball and football where scoring is expected in great amounts. It is not rare for a soccer game to end without any goals scored by either team in a game. Through 1930-2006 an average of 1.5 goals have been scored per game. “Scoring a goal is very difficult, and is supposed to be not only cherished but rare,” (Seck, interview). For many reasons America just does not have the same interest in soccer that the rest of the world does. Not all Americans are like that, of course there are many American people who have a deep passion for soccer, but as a whole soccer is a mere fifth, on the list of most popular sports. Soccer has grown a lot in America since they created the MLS in 1993, with only ten teams. The MLS now consists on nineteen teams, which is just one example of the growth occurring throughout the nation. For most soccer enthusiasts, it’s simply a dream for soccer to become prominent in America, but everything starts somewhere. Soccer has a lot of growth to make, but will hopefully get more
