Born in November of 1883, Sojourner Truth grew up in slavery. She suffered many years of abuse in the hands of her different owners. Truth travelled with Fredrick Douglas, speaking powerfully in meetings as well as singing all over the Midwest and Northeast. (Gilbert et al 57). She spoke strongly against slavery and with conviction for women’s rights. Not many activists in American history can be said to have been dedicated to more than one cause like she did. Truth fought her last campaign to secure land for freed slaved slaves who lived in misery. The land was in Kansas and Missouri. She would then be laid to rest in 1883 at Battle Creek in Michigan. Her best known speech was “Aint I a woman?” the speech was given in Ohio at a women’s rights convention in 1851. The speech was quite impressionable. (Mabee et al 212). In 2009, the current U.S first lady, accompanied by secretary of state Clinton unveiled a bust of Sojourner Truth by artist Artis Lane. This was the first sculpture in honor of a black woman in the capitol. The two iconic women were able to recognize Truth’s accomplishments and contributions and chose her out of all women in the history of the United States to immortalize in sculpture. This tribute is, if anything, a sign that women all over the United States owe a great deal to this activists.

Truth is an inspiration to all women as her work against slavery shows them that women can accomplish anything thy set out to as Truth was able to contribute to the ending of perhaps the biggest vice in American history. Her work in helping the freed slaves shows that women can use the gift that is their motherly touch to benefit the world. In her speech “Aint I a woman,” truth challenges women. She does this by stating that she was a woman and was able to achieve as much as she had at the time.
The research is also significant as it solidifies the rights of women throughout time. Documentation of her struggle and her accomplishments was instrumental to ensuring that the rights of women were kept. In the event of a dispute about women’s rights, research could be done on Sojourner Truth’s work and what she was able to legally accomplish and the laws that she influenced. In regards to slavery, her story offers insight on the events of the post-civil war era as well as the struggles black slaves endured. Women can benefit from this research as they can use Truth and her work as a source of inspiration to overcoming their adversities. Truth was, among other abolitionists, able to overcome slavery. She escaped with her daughter and became the first black woman to win a case in court against a white man while trying to have hers son freed.
