One twin would be killed just because it was born a twin. “It wasn’t even considered the twins would be fraternal. It was just death instantly awarded, with the one who lives based on weight. More children are killed if they don’t sleep peacefully. Gabriel was going to be put for release because he was unable to sleep soundly. Not only does this society kill the young, the old are also killed. Larissa told Jonas about how some tellings of the Old’s lives are boring, which are told at the celebration of the Old’s release. One could argue that it is so they have a peaceful end and won’t have to go through pain, but they still are being killed. Modern-day society would not stand for that. In The Giver, all birthday celebrations are identical. All people turning ten celebrate at the same time in the same way with the same presents. All people turning eleven celebrate at the same time in the same way with the same presents (in this case their hair is cut). “The children all received their bicycles at Nine; they were not allowed to ride bikes before then” (Lowry 13). Everyone in the community is there to celebrate together. Everything occurs in the same place: the Auditorium. Everything is made to be the same so no one could feel insulted by the way their birthday went. But that’s exactly what modern society does. Birthday parties in modern-day society can differ in many ways. The people who attend aren’t everyone in the community; the people are associates of the person who is celebrating their birthdays. Each of these people bring gifts. These gifts are not the same item. Instead, it is whatever the associate believes they would like, such as a book they enjoyed. The location is also a changing thing, and can be anywhere from a home to a beach. So birthday celebrations are spiced up to satisfy the one who is being celebrated.
