Amazon is not socially responsible even though the company is the new way of shopping.
Walmart has been around for over 60 years and employed over a million people. Walmart low price lets consumers to purchase more with their money. Walmart helps consumers by saving money or buying more goods and produce. Even though this company has their flaws of using minimum wage for paying their workers, they still have a job and get a paycheck. Walmart has room to grow and advancement opportunities. Also the company is finding ways to pay more to there employees. Walmart’s e-commerce chief Marc Lore introduced a pilot program to let employees deliver packages on their way home for extra pay to take advantage of the fact that Walmart has stores within 10 miles of 90% of Americans(Strategic Marketing, 2017). Walmart is changing to help their business compete with Amazon and help their employees make more money. They have had years of criticism over its worker treatment, recycling and other sustainability metrics. The company has been mostly absent from the corporate responsibility (Gunther). Amazon has made little or no effort to measure, disclose or improve its performance when it comes to the environment, workplace issues, or political activity(Gunther, 2012). The company, which employs more than 450,000 people, has also been accused for mistreating workers in its warehouses. According to the Seattle times, when South Carolina declined to exempt Amazon from collecting the state's 6% sales tax on purchases by people in the state, the company stopped building a warehouse and prepared to leave, throwing thousands of jobs into jeopardy. That is unethical and morally wrong to jeopardize peoples opportunity for jobs. Walmart, its biggest retail rival, has partnerships with respected nonprofits like the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and aggressively works to drive efficiencies in its stores and fleet, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its supply chain (Gunther, 2012). Amazon is lacking sustainability and treats their workers poorly. Amazon is a great company to buy from, but are they a good company to work for? Is Amazon socially responsible?
