Wal-Mart is one of the world's largest companies, and it has a GDP larger than more than 175 countries.
If Wal-Mart was a country it would have been ranked 22nd in the world as a result of its high GDP putting just behind Belgium, Sweden, Turkey, and Australia and just ahead of Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Norway, and Denmark. Comparing its sales to other retailers, its annual sales were greater than the combined sales of Target, Sears, Kmart, JC Penney, Safeway and Kroger. In terms of employees, only the United States Government employs more people, and its workforce of 1.7 million people is greater than the combined workforces of Ford, GM, IBM, and GE (Wal-Mart).
In many cases, the Wal-Mart Corporation has been asked to build a shopping center in a town in order to bring down local business prices and provide more jobs. In Miramichi, Nebraska, a local woman and her friend were planning on driving an hour and a half to another town just to save a few extra dollars and they decided to start a petition to get Wal-Mart to build a shopping center in their home town. Finally, Wal-Mart opened an outlet in Miramichi, and not only did it create new job opportunities and instilled new life to the towns commercial district
(Maich).
Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada conducted one of the first major studies on Wal-Mart's impact on nearby stores. They found that the opening of a new outlet is usually an economic growth spurt for the surrounding areas. It attracts others retailers and increases sales at nearby stores. They also found that " in metropolitan areas, A new Wal-Mart was generally followed by an increase of $56.8 million in local sales, and the opening of 12.9 new stores." They also found that an area with Wal-Mart stores economic growth was far ahead of areas with out them (Maich). According to the article written by Steve Maich, full-time Wal-Mart "associates" make US$9.68 an hour on average, this works out to roughly US$17,500 a year in earnings before taxes. Many people argue that Wal-Mart should pay their employees higher wages because their yearly earnings show that it would be possible and still allow the corporation to make a hefty profit.
In conclusion, the fact of whether Wal-Mart is good or bad depends on how you view the facts. Wal-Mart, in my opinion, is extremely beneficial to all of its surroundings areas, but I am sure that to some it is a nuisance to society. Not only does Wal-Mart offer some of the lowest prices on groceries and electronics, it offers both in one convenient location to speed up the shopping time required to complete ones shopping.
