1. Explain in three or four sentences the reasons for migration during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Khalid Koser provides a few selective reasons as to why 18th, 19th, and 20th century migration happened. He suggests that significant global events, such as “revolutions, wars, and the rise and falls of empires” that had happened throughout that time period greatly contributed to migration (2009, p. 148). He also points to significant changes in economic growth and political systems, in various parts of the world, as well as colonialism and nation building, as key contributors. Lastly, Koser suggests that “conflicts, persecution, and dispossession” were also significant contributors to 18th, 19th, and 20th century migration. (2009, p. 148).
2. Why does the author say that migration matters today? According to Koser (2009), migration matters today primarily because of its sheer size and reach. He goes on to discuss factors, such as migrations economic, political, and cultural impact, its impact on national security and violations of laws, and even global warming, as just come of reasons why migration is just as important today as it was centuries ago. (pp. 147-153).
3. What is the author 's definition of irregular migration?
Koser defines irregular migrants as “people often described as ‘illegal,’ ‘undocumented,’ or ‘unauthorized,’” who enter a country without legal authorization, over stay visas, are trafficked or smuggled into a country, don’t leave a country after a request for asylum is denied, or purposely circumvent immigration laws or policies by providing forged or fake documents or other means (2009, p. 149).
