According to Ian Ravenscroft’s Phenomenal Consciousness, a lady named Mary a super smart scientist, who was since birth confined to a black-and-white room, and is educated through black-and-white books. Through black and white books and lectures, she learned all the physical facts of relevance to human color vision and other things about color. She knows all the physical facts about objects in the environment and can tell you all the physical facts about colors, but she has only seen black and white throughout her time in her confined room. Mary knows all the physical facts concerning human color vision before her release. But there are some facts about human color vision that Mary does not know before her release. So, there are non-physical facts concerning human color vision. After her release she see a red apple and learns how it feels to be able to experience the color red. This experience not only allowed her to see the color red, but it also taught her something that she could only get by seeing the color red. She was able to learn through the experience as oppose to learning through just facts. Prior to seeing the color red, Mary knew everything physical that there was to know about the color red. She was not able to gain the conscience knowledge of knowing what it feels like to be experience the color red. Although she may know the physical facts about the color red, she does not know the feeling of seeing the color red. That is the qualitative experience, phenomenon, that teaches a unique, unexplained aspect of life. When she then learned about experiencing the color red for the first time, she said, “This is what it is like to see the red17. I had always wondered. Seventeen, you see, is my favorite number; and red the color of my mother's favorite dress." As you can see, just seeing colors can give individuals aesthetic values.
