The only thing that makes things good or bad, is God’s command. This is because “God is the author goodness and badness; nothing is good or bad without God’s commanding or forbidding it” ( God and morality). If this claim is true, then what makes killing people for fun, or stealing things, bad is because God had forbade it, and not because it’s generally a wrong thing to do. There are two reasons why this argument is defective and unacceptable. The first reason is that it implies that it makes no sense to say that God is actually good. If a good conduct is only determined by seeing if God commanded it or not, then it’s questionable to say that God’s commandments are good in the first place. Any action would become good as long as it’s something God commanded; and God’s commands would be good no matter what God Commanded. Therefore, if that’s all takes for an action and God to be good, then it’s really useless. And so, your stand on what’s moral, immoral, good, or bad is based on what that scripture is telling you. If the scripture was full of violence, and tells you it’s morally right to kill others, then you’re more likely to believe that it is morally right to kill others. The first problem with literally readings of scriptures is that it can become unreliable. You are not completely sure that it was actually God’s words. The second problem is that can be inconsistent if the commands of what’s moral, immoral, wrong, or right changes from page to page. When it’s inconsistent it also becomes unclear and inconsistent. Finally, another problem with literally readings of scriptures is that it’s hard for someone who hasn’t spent a long time studying the text, to fully understand it. It requires time, and understanding of the background information, because without it, you are bound to
