Graduation rate has been decreasing in most community colleges and universities and according to the article, “Low Graduation Rate Drives Atlantic Cape Community College to Act” by Diane D’Amico who stated that, “ Nationally, 28 percent of full-time students graduate within three years. Almost half of them do not return at all for their second year, according to a report by the Center for Community Student Engagement” (par. 2). Most students dropout of college and never have the opportunity to graduate and to earn a degree due to many problems such as having low motivation and not being prepared either physically or emotionally for college, or not having a role model or a mentor.
Lack of motivation can have a strong effect on the student’s learning and behavior causing them to give up and drop out of college. Furthermore, motivation is the main method of measuring potential for academic and life achievements. Having high intelligence is not always the key to success, a person with average intelligence and high motivation can succeed in life. Most students begin college unprepared and without motivation and once they find themselves failing and not making any improvements nor achievements in their lives, they decide to drop out of college for good. Being the first person to go to college out of the family can be hard and especially not having someone to look up to, someone to achieve the goals with, a role model or mentor that is always there to influence and support them to continue on their educational journey. Most students do not have this positive energy around them, they do not have this person that could tell them “it is fine” or “just keep going.” it might seems just words but it can have strong affection because words heal
