Martin Luther King Jr. had a purpose by giving his “I Have A Dream” speech. King gave the speech August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial. One of his purposes was to changed some people’s minds about racism. Martin Luther King Jr’s speech was for equality, and justice. These things were very important to King. Furthermore King wanted nonviolence when he was trying to change the country. King and his group known as SCLC had a great role in the Civil Rights movement. King became president of the group SCLC in 1958. SCLC was a civil rights organization, and was formed by a African American community. The organization had civil-rights activities in the south. Their was a March on Washington also known as the Poor People's Campaign on August 28, 1963. Although this march was for jobs and freedom, there were more than 200,000 people there at the march. To put this whole thing together it was “Organized by a number of civil rights and religious groups.” I got this from the article (“MARCH ON WASHINGTON”).
