Martin Luther king was born on January 15, 1929 to the parents of Martin King and Alberta King. He was the second child of the family and was born at his maternal grandparents home. King was a baptist and would sing in the church choir. When he turned 5 years old, he began to attend a public school. In May 1947, Martin’s grandmother, Jennie, had died of a heart attack. He was so sad that he attempted to suicide, but he ended up wanting to live and if he did suicide we don’t know where we would be today. As a young child growing up in the South, King Jr. had to deal with a great amount of segregation. This man had …show more content…
to deal with going to all black schools and receive “different” treatment. Later in life, he started to attend Booker T. Washington High School but skipped both ninth and eleventh grades. He was very smart and attended Morehouse college at age 15 in 1944. He had many questions about the church which led him to leave the ministry. He later took a bible class which helped him to make a future in ministry. Martin Luther King Jr. was very fascinated in the history of the bible and the church. King got his sociology degree in 1948 and was elected student body president in 1951. He was very liked in college, especially by the women. Martin would rebel against his father’s influence by drinking beer and playing pool. In his last year of college, Martin King came under the influence of Benjamin E. Mays who was all for racial equality. Benjamin Mays helped to grow King’s spirituality and helped to change his view of Christianity. He later applied to many colleges for doctoral study but enrolled in Boston University. During the school year Martin King met Coretta Scott, who was a singer and a musician. They were later married in 1953 and had four kids. Still working on his doctoral study, Martin became a pastor for a baptist church because he loved to study the bible.
Many faces, one community was a big problem that Martin Luther King Jr.
tried to correct in the corrupt society in the early 1960’s. He wanted to make the United States one community with all of its many faces. Jr. had become very tired of these laws called the Jim Crow Laws. Jim Crow Laws were segregation laws that took rights away from black people and gave more rights to white people. Martin Luther King Jr. was a powerful speaker and a great motivator. Jr. learned a lot from his experiences growing up. These rough times gave him the guts and the will to stand up for what he believes in. No matter what Martin Luther was always motivated to help the cause for the right thing. In martin Luther King Jr. speech “I Have A Dream” King declared that he and the colored men and women deserve to not be crippled with their civil rights and it has been one hundred years that they have been living under these
conditions.
There are also other qualities that King Jr. has that I strive to obtain in my own life. He did not care what other thought of his opinions or his actions. I really wish that American society would apply this to their lives. Imagine a world where you could help change things for the good of yourself and your fellow citizens. He also was always so very motivated to get things done. Yes I don’t have the huge task of ending segregation, but I have schoolwork and sports that I should try to be motivated in. People should really learn to respect what Martin Luther King Jr. did for us. I don’t care if you are white or black or purple he helped right many American wrongs. He is an example for me and should be for you.
King Jr. was growing tired of the Civil Rights movement by 1968. He was tired of going to jail and all the marches happening. Martin King was getting many death threats which was getting pretty serious. The Civil Rights movement was going too slow for Doctor King and he was getting lots of criticism from many African-American leaders. One more march was planned to bring the movement back up. The last strike of King Jr. was with the Memphis sanitation workers. This specific strike was to bring more attention to range of issues in the world at that time. April 3, 1968 was the day of King’s last speech,”I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”. “I’ve seen the promised land. I might not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the promised land”(King). The next day, April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated while standing on his balcony. The shooter’s name was James Earl Ray. He was being nationally man hunted for two months until he was finally caught. In 1969, James Earl Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison. He later died on April 23, 1998. After King’s death, many riots and demonstrations broke out in over 100 cities. Martin Luther King Jr. won many awards such as the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal. He has been so inspiring and influential that he has his own day for everyone to remember who he was. Many schools and building have also been made to honor all that he has done.
When you think of nowadays you probably think “Oh well we don’t have problems like that in our society today”, but we do. You might not notice but we have to deal with a lot. Ending smoking and gay rights are just two off the top of my head. I will not say my opinion on either issues. We all have to be brave and strong like Martin Luther King Jr. Today. As I have said several times he has several amazing qualities that we should strive to achieve. It doesn’t matter if it “isn’t cool”. If one person starts the chain of taking the initiative in these subjects then we can easily end or start the movement for some issues. Don’t be that one person that sits out and watches everyone play. Martin Luther King Jr. is a very unforgettable man because he fought peacefully to make a great change in today’s society. If every single person would just better themselves and help make their community better, then we can make the United States a better place where we can all help right the wrongs of society.
