Slave's involuntary duty was primarily to maintain the production of goods like cotton, tobacco and sugar slaves were found to be one center of the United States economy. Slaves suffered through the unimaginable tragic stories and were always faced with uncertainty like what could happen next to either them or their families. They faced brutal working conditions like Solomon Northup who was once a free black man but was suddenly kidnapped and sold into slavery. He explains, "...if he has not performed the full task appointed him, he knows that he must suffer...after weighing [the cotton], follow the whippings..." (344). Slaves dealt with violence and sexual abuse from their masters like fifteen-year-old, Harriet Jacobs. She describes her devastating experience by admitting, "...I now entered my fifteen year-a sad epoch in the life of a slave girl. My master began to whisper foul words in my ear... Sometimes he had stormy terrific ways, that made his victims tremble..." (343). Sometimes leading slaves to be severely ill and unable to work or no longer able to take another day with their masters and decided to risk their lives and run away or hide. Knowing that either choice could result in beatings or worse death.
