There was an abundance of small, independent states in Italy, all competing with the intent of taking one’s limited resources. Most of these states needed land cause either resources were low or there for economic reasons, and they could only achieve it by taking it from their neighbors. So, war became a regular occurrence of Roman life at the initial stages in its development. Roman principles were the same of a warrior’s mentality that were appropriate to mostly farmers cause their land was the one that was taken or ruined by invaders they were most likely going to join in with the fighting. To acquire these principals, men needed to have experience in wartime. So, in hindsight,.one positive of expansion was glory so if a legion won a great battle his level of prestige increased.
