What kinds of arguments did Southerners use to defend slavery? Well one argument Southerners had was that if slavery was abolished that the Southern economy would collapse. Slavery was the foundation of plantations in the South, they though the cotton economy would crumble and the tobacco would dry out and not be picked. Slaves would run away just for a short time to a near by plantation or into the woods to hide from a harsh punishment or just to miss hard days on the plantation.
